Baseball Drops Opener to Greenville

Set to play Nebraska Wesleyan tomorrow at 3 p.m.

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team began its 2023 slate Thursday, Feb. 23, with a 10-0 seven-inning loss at Greenville University. Five Titan errors proved to be costly as the Panthers earned the program's first victory of the season, while IWU dropped to 0-1 with the setback.

In the top of the first, leadoff hitter, sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Moneka, Ill.-St. Laurence) was on the receiving end of an 0-2 curveball that resulted in a HBP to get things rolling for the Titans early. A sophomore Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) walk later in the inning created first and second with two gone. Ultimately, the Panthers defense retired the side as the game remained scoreless heading into the home half of the first.

In the bottom of the first, GU got its first two runners on via a double and an IWU fielding error. The Panthers tallied the game's first run on a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back putouts by freshman Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) ended the threat as the opener remained 1-0, in favor of the home team, after one inning of play.

Sophomore Keenan Burgos (Park Ridge, Ill.-Niles Notre Dame) produced the Green and White's first hit of the 2023 campaign with a single through the right side to lead off the second inning.

GU tacked on another run in the second inning by taking advantage of a Titan miscue. The score heading into the third stood at 2-0, before the Panthers plated five runs on four hits in the fourth to break the game open, 7-0.

Greenville tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh innings as the Titans were sacked with a 10-0 setback.

The Panthers outhit the Titans by a final tally of 11-4. Tomhave, senior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West), Burgos, and junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) each manufactured a hit in the opener.

Sophomore Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) took the loss (0-1) on the bump for the Titans. Hartman tossed two and two-thirds innings of work, allowing three hits and striking out one. Junior Luke Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill.-Richmond-Burton), freshman Jonathan Ciullo (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), freshman Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), and freshman Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) all made their Illinois Wesleyan debut on the hill.

The Green and White will see a quick turnaround with a single, nine-inning, matchup with Nebraska Wesleyan University. First pitch is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m., with the game being played at Shaw Park in St. Louis, Mo.
