Baseball Falls to Prairie Wolves

Titans return to action for a pair of games tomorrow, Feb. 26

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Looking to bounce back from an opening day setback, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took on Nebraska Wesleyan University, Saturday, Feb. 25 at Shaw Park, in a neutral site matchup that was hosted by Fontbonne University. NWU used an eight-run inning to defeat IWU by a final score of 12-4. The Prairie Wolves record jumped to 4-1, while Illinois Wesleyan's record dipped to 0-2.

Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the third, the Titans used back-to-back hits and a Prairie Wolves error to produce their first run of the game. Sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) singled up the middle, then senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) hit one to right center for a single that advanced Gurgone to third. Junior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) reached on an error from the NWU shortstop, which allowed Gurgone to cross home to bring the score to 2-1.

The fourth inning saw the Prairie Wolves put up eight runs to bring the score to 10-1, which proved to be the difference in the game, as NWU went on to win, 12-6.

Both teams recorded 13 hits. Illinois Wesleyan committed three errors to the Prairie Wolves one. Sophomore Keenan Burgos (Park Ridge, Ill.-Niles Notre Dame) tallied a team-high three hits. Ping, Perona, and sophomore Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) each notched a pair of hits in the setback.

Senior Will Jackson (Glenview, Ill.-Loyola Academy) fell to 0-1, as he left the game after 3.1 innings that saw six hits and five earned runs. Freshman Nathan Waterman (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove) made his Titan debut on the bump, tossing two innings.

The Green and White will remain in St. Louis to conclude the program's four-game weekend slate. IWU will compete in the team's first doubleheader of the young season, tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 26, with a neutral site game against Nebraska Wesleyan at 11 a.m., followed by the night cap against Fontbonne University at 1:30 p.m. Both games are set to be played at Shaw Park.
