Men’s Tennis Sweeps Monmouth in Home Opener

Titans turnaround quickly with a dual against Webster University Feb. 19

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team swept its 2022-23 home opener against Monmouth College Saturday, Feb. 18. With the victory, the Titans move to 2-3 in dual matches on the season.

Freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill-Bloomington) made quick work at No. 1 singles, winning both of his sets 6-0. Juniors Evan Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Joshua Cortez (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame College Prep) also swept their opponents at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

Senior Carter Burk won his match at No. 2 singles with set scores 6-1, 6-3, and junior Jordan Sibley-Diggs (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park & River Forest) was victorious at No. 5 singles, winning his sets 6-1, 6-1.

In the doubles portion of the match, junior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and sophomore Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) won at No. 1 with a score of 8-1, and freshmen Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) took the win at No. 2, 8-0.

Due to limited players for Monmouth, No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles were won by forfeit.

The Titans will have a quick turnaround, as they will host Webster University for a dual match tomorrow. First serve is scheduled for noon inside Evergreen Racquet Club. Results will be posted upon the completion of the match on iwusports.com.
