Men’s Volleyball Closes Out Home Tournament with Two Wins

DiCosola records 500th career assist as Titans improve to 8-5

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team finished the second day of the IWU Invitational with two wins, taking down Wisconsin Lutheran College and Edgewood College. With the wins, IWU matches its program-record win total from a season ago at 8-5, accomplishing the feat in just 13 matches. 

Illinois Wesleyan used a plethora of bench action to secure the victory over WLC (4-7) to begin the second day of the tournament. Sixteen Titans participated in the match, winning with scores of 25-13, 26-24, 25-19. The Green and White outmatched the Warriors in every statistical category, holding an advantage in kills (45-24), digs (31-30), assists (40-21), aces (6-5), and blocks (4-1). IWU put together a .290 attack percentage and limited Wisconsin Lutheran to .078.  

Freshman Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the match with a career-best 14 kills on a .385 attack percentage, followed by junior Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Ignatius) and freshman Hayden Warfield (Winston Salem, N.C.-Dakar Academy) with eight and six, respectively. Sophomore Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) recorded a match-high 22 assists, bringing him to the 500 career assist mark. Junior Dominic Bennett (Lockport, Ill.-Plainfield Central) finished with 14 assists. Eastman notched three aces, the most by a player in the match. 

DiCosola and Bennett led the Titan defense with five digs apiece. Junior Michael Anderson (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield Central) made his Green and White debut with two blocks, while Warfield earned a pair of rejections in the match. 

The Titans closed out their home invitational with a four-set thriller over Edgewood. After dropping the first set 25-23, IWU rallied back to take the next three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-21. The Green and White recorded 44 kills on a .114 clip, while holding the Eagles to 37 kills and a .099 attack percentage. Illinois Wesleyan outnumbered EC in digs (55-52), assists (44-36), and aces (8-6), but lost the upperhand in blocks (12-7). 

The Titans offense was led by Eastman's 17 kills and three digs, both of which were match-highs. Perez and sophomore Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) followed suit with eight kills each, while DiCosola accumulated 24 assists. 

DiCosola led the Green and White defense with 15 kills to complete his first double-double performance of the season, the second in the sophomore's career. Sophomore Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) recorded a team-high five blocks in the match.
