Men's Volleyball Sees Win Streak Snapped by Stars

Titans win streak halted at four

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team was upended at home Wednesday night, Feb. 15, by Dominican University. The Titans (8-6) battled back to tie the match at one set apiece before falling to the Stars (1-3) in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25).

Illinois Wesleyan was stymied offensively, hitting at a .036 clip to DU's .206 hitting percentage. The Titans finished with seven blocks to the Stars' 13. Dominican held a 42-35 edge in kills and a 37-34 lead in digs. The Titans were credited with five aces to DU's four.

Junior Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) led the Titans with nine kills on 21 attempts, good for a .190 attacking percentage, while sophomore Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) added eight kills on a .235 clip. The setting duo of junior Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) and sophomore Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) added a pair of double-doubles. Benson finished with 13 assists and 11 digs, while DiCosola added 13 helpers and 10 digs.

Defensively, Benson led the team in digs. Junior Javier Romano (Prospect Heights, Ill.-Wheeling), Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), and Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-St. Ignatius) tied for the team lead with three blocks each.

The first set swung back and forth from start to finish, but ultimately saw Dominican win its first set of the season, 25-22, as IWU was plagued by service errors.

In the second set, a Kougan kill provided the Green and White with a 3-1 lead early on. The Titans maintained their advantage, eventually upping it to three on Benson's ace. A serve, which trickled off the top of the tape, gave IWU a 17-14 lead, before Romano's kill evened the match at one all.

After Dominican snagged the third set, 25-17, Illinois Wesleyan saw a 16-13 lead erased. The Stars came back with a three-point run out of a timeout before finishing up the match in four sets, 25-21.

The Titans travel to Rockford, Ill. for their next match against Rockford University on Friday, Feb. 4. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
