Men’s Volleyball Sweeps First Day of IWU Invitational

Titans took down Wabash and for second time this season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team swept both of its matches in the first day of the IWU Invitational Friday night, Feb. 10. The Titans began the tournament by taking down Wabash College (2-7) in the first match of the tournament, then finished the night with a victory over Adrian College (6-4).

The first match of the tournament saw the Titans sweep Wabash with set scores 25-18, 25-12, 32-30, powered by 41 kills on a .300 attack percentage, while limiting the Little Giants to 28 attacks on a .152 clip. IWU also held a statistical advantage in assists (39-27), digs (33-29), blocks (7-4), and recorded all eight aces in the match.

Junior Julian Perez (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) paced the offense with 10 kills on 19 attacks, good for a .474 attack percentage. Junior Michael Eastman (Chicago, Ill.-Saint Ignatius) followed with nine, and sophomore Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) tallied seven. Freshman Noah Casillas (Palatine, Ill.-Platine) notched his first career kill, as he came in off the bench in the second set. Junior Javier Romano (Prospect Heights, Ill.-Wheeling) led the match with a career-best three aces.

Sophomore Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) and junior Bradley Benson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont Township) continued to orchestrate the majority of the Titan offense, as the pair recorded 23 and 14 assists, respectively.

On the defensive side, junior KJ Johnson (Saint John, Ind.-Marian Catholic) compiled a match-high nine digs, while Eastman followed with eight. The Titans net defense was led by Romano and Perez, who recorded four and three blocks, respectively.

IWU continued its dominant night with a three-set victory over the Bulldogs, powered behind 10 kills from Eastman, the most by a player in the match. Illinois Wesleyan held slim advantages in kills (30-28), attack percentage (.192-.130), assists (28-27), and digs (27-26), but was boosted by six aces, to Adrian's none, and a 5-1 advantage in blocks.

Myers and sophomore Luke Hartke (Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) each contributed five kills to help lead the offense with Eastman. Myers and Eastman both recorded two aces, while DiCosola and Romano had one. Benson strung together a match-high 18 assists.

The Green and White continued to prove its strong net protection, as Perez and sophomore Jake Kougan (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) led the way with a trio of blocks. Johnson accumulated six digs, while Eastman added five.

The Titans have a quick turnaround, as they return to action tomorrow morning, Feb. 11, for the second, and final day of the tournament.
