Men's Hoops Takes Care of NCC on the Road

Titans move to 3-1 in the CCIW

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team wore down North Central College Saturday night, Dec. 9, using a balanced effort to earn a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win. The Titans moved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW with a 66-43 win, while the Cardinals slipped to 3-6 on the year, 2-2 in league play.

A balanced showing saw seven Titans finish with six-or-more points, led by juniors Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) and Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South). Wilmsen put up a team-high 11 points, while Anderson added 10 and tied for the team-lead with five rebounds. Senior Luke Yoder (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic) stuffed the stat sheet with six points, seven assists, and five rebounds.

Juniors Nick Roper (St. Louis, Mo.-MICDS) and Shane Miller (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) along with sophomore Karlo Colak (Glencoe, Ill.-New Trier) tallied eight points apiece. Miller also snatched a game-high four steals.

Illinois Wesleyan's defense continued to stymie the opposition, as North Central was limited to 31 percent from the floor (18-for-58) and 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from beyond the arc. NCC went 3-for-3 at the free throw line. The Titans went 26-for-60 from the field, good for a 43.3 clip, despite hitting just 3-of-21 triples. IWU finished 11-for-16 at the charity stripe.

IWU won the turnover battle, 14-7, to mount a 26-5 advantage in points off miscues. The Titans also enjoyed leads in points in the paint (32-20), second chance scoring (14-5), fastbreak points (12-2), and bench scoring (28-23).

Illinois Wesleyan led by just seven at the half as the Green and White closed the first period on a 6-0 run. A swipe and score from Miller was followed by a crafty finish from Roper, before senior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) closed the run with free throws.

In the second half, the Cardinals trimmed the Titan lead to four, before a corner triple from Sroka pushed the IWU lead back to seven, 38-31. Yoder followed with back-to-back assists, one that resulted in a Colak three and then another that led to a Wilmsen bucket, to lift IWU to a 41-33 advantage.

A six-point run from sophomore Nathan Boldt (Deer Park, Ill.-Barrington) upped the Titan lead to 54-37, before Miller gave IWU its largest lead of the game with three minutes to play.

The Green and White closed things out from there, picking up its third CCIW win of the season, 66-43.
