All-Around Effort Leads Women’s Volleyball into CCIW Tournament Semifinal

Titans win 10th straight match

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team rolled into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament semifinals with a 3-1 victory over fifth-seeded Augustana College Tuesday night, Nov. 7. IWU won its 10th straight match with set scores of 25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21.

Senior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) and sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) each finished with double-doubles in the win. Pierce dished out a career-high 48 assists with 13 digs, while French totaled a career-high 29 kills. The Romeoville, Ill. native tied senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) for the team lead with 19 digs. Senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) and junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) notched seven kills apiece, with Babec hitting .333 for the match.

In all, IWU cranked out a 101-89 advantage in digs. After matching her career-high numerous times, senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) went off for a career-best 17 digs. Freshman Olivia deGuzman (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Divine Savior Holy Angels) tallied 14 digs, with fellow freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) adding 10.

Harrington recorded a team-high four blocks, while Babec contributed three rejections as the Titans held a 4-2 lead in net defense.

Illinois Wesleyan totaled 62 kills on the night with a .212 attacking percentage, while Augie finished with 43 kills on a .142 clip. IWU also registered a 7-4 lead in aces, with Washko credited with a match-high three.

An Augustana service error and an attacking error erased the Vikings early lead before Palmer's kill gave IWU the lead, 5-4. Babec and Harrington later combined on a pair of blocks as the Titan lead grew to four, 12-8. French kills forced Augie timeouts with IWU leading 15-9 and 18-10, but it did little to slow the Green and White as French's 10th kill of the set gave the home team the set, 25-15.

Palmer and Harrington combined for a rejection to open up a 6-1 lead for the Titans in the second set. Summers later tooled a block to maintain IWU's lead, 17-12, and force an Augie timeout. The Vikings rattled off back-to-back points to pull within three, 17-14, but Harrington halted the run with a kill. Augustana burned its second timeout of the set with the home team in front, 21-16, after a Pierce dump set. Illinois Wesleyan went on to take the set, 25-19, behind back-to-back kills by Babec and French.

The Titans got behind early in the third set before back-to-back aces from Washko tied it up at 13 all and forced an Augie timeout. Illinois Wesleyan pulled within a couple points late in the set before the Vikings ultimately won the third 25-51 and forced a fourth set.

It was back and forth early in the fourth set, as a French kill and deGuzman ace put the Titans up 11-9. Later in the set, the Green and White would go on a five-point run, highlighted by a Feeney ace and Babec kill, to make the score 22-17. A service error would end the Viking's season, 25-21, and send the Titans into the CCIW Tournament semifinals.

The Titans advance to the CCIW Tournament semifinals where they will face No. 1 seed North Park in Chicago, Ill. Thursday, November 9. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
