Women’s Volleyball Hosts Augustana in CCIW Tournament Quarterfinals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team will host Augustana College Tuesday night, Nov. 7, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Quarterfinals. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center with the Titans holding the No. 4 seed and the Vikings serving as the fifth-seed in the tournament.

The Titans (16-12) enter Tuesday's bout riding a nine-game win streak, with the most recent win coming in four sets over Aurora University in a Senior Day special Saturday, Nov. 4. The offense was well-balanced with six players recording at least six kills. Sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the way with 27 kills, tying her career-high, on a .297 clip, while junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) finished with nine. Senior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) tallied a career-high 46 assists. Freshman Olivia deGuzman (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Divine Savior Holy Angels) led the defense with 13 digs, while senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) finished with a team-best three blocks. 

Illinois Wesleyan's offense has been led by French's sensational season. One of the nation's most explosive offensive players, French sits within the top-10 nationally in kills (526), points (593), kills per set (4.74), and points per set (5.34). Senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) has had an impressive final season for the Green and White, as she is second on the team in kills with 179. Harrington rounds out the top-three with 158. 

Pierce has orchestrated the majority of the offense, as she leads the team with 482 assists, averaging 8.03 per set. Freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) is second with 326, and junior Abby Erdman's (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) 191 helpers is third-most on the team. French leads the Titans with 48 aces, while senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) is second on the squad with 28. Pierce and deGuzman have each tallied 24 aces on the season to sit tied for third-most. 

Defensively, French leads the Green and White with 380 digs, averaging 3.42 per set. Washko, who has a team-best average of 5.02 per set, has totaled 331 digs, while Feeney's 215 are the third-most for the Titans. Making a heavy net presence in her freshman campaign, Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) leads IWU with 68 total blocks, 17 coming on solo stuffs. Babec is second with 55, composed of 11 solo and 44 assisted, while Harrington's 34 total blocks are third-most for Illinois Wesleyan. 

Tuesday's contest will be the 46th meeting between the two squads, dating back to 1994. Illinois Wesleyan holds a 26-19 advantage in the series, and took the most recent meeting in five sets Sept. 27. Pierce posted a near triple-double in that match, finishing with 44 assists, 12 digs, and nine kills on a .333 clip. French totaled a 24-kill, 13-dig double-double performance, while Washko led the team with 28 digs. 

While the Titans take on the Vikings, the other CCIW Quarterfinal match will see sixth-seeded Elmhurst University travel to third-seeded Carthage College. Winners of Tuesday's matches will advance to face second-seed Millikin University and top-seed North Park University Thursday, Nov. 9.
