Men’s Hoops Falls at Elmhurst

Titans host Carroll University Saturday, Dec. 2

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team fell to Elmhurst University, 90-73, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener Wednesday night, Nov. 29. The Titans fall to 4-3 overall, 0-1 in CCIW action, while the Bluejays stay unbeaten, moving to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in conference play.

IWU shot 48.4 percent overall, but the difference came from long range, as the Titans were limited to 27.3 percent from long range, while EU capitalized on a 12-for-28 showing from deep. The Green and White saw advantages in bench points (19-11) and points in the paint (36-26), while the Bluejays recorded 21 points off turnovers, compared to IWU's 14. Each team recorded eight second chance points.

Senior Luke Yoder (Normal, Ill.-Central Catholic) led the team with 17 points, sinking four of six three pointers, and was one of three Titans to record five rebounds. Junior Nick Roper (St. Louis, Mo.-MICDS) added 15 points, and senior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12. Junior Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) added eight points to coincide with five boards, three assists, two blocks, and a steal.

The game remained close, as the Titans trailed 51-48 with 11:07 remaining in the contest, until Elmhurst sank a three pointer, quickly followed by a layup to extend its lead to six with just under 10 minutes left.

Utilizing a team rebound on defense, junior Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) found Sroka, who nailed a three to bring the game to within one, 58-57, with 7:30 left to play, but the Bluejays would quickly regroup and hold onto the lead the rest of the way, taking the league opener, 90-73.

Illinois Wesleyan returns home to host Carroll University Saturday, Dec. 2. The men's game is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start, serving as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's basketball team.
