CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team sent a quartet to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the Coe College Invitational Saturday, Nov. 18, inside Kohawk Arena where two Titans placed in their respective weight classes.
After receiving a bye in the opening round to advance to the 184-pound quarterfinals, junior Bobby Conroy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University High) needed only 90 seconds to pin Hector Izaguirre of St. Ambrose University. In the semifinals, Conroy would win by a 4-2 decision over Millikin Universty's Benicio Martinez to move onto the championships. Conroy would eventually take second in the championship match to Jared Voss of Coe, who ranks third in the lower midwest region at 197 pounds.
Freshman Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) won his opening bout in the 133-pound bracket as he pinned (1:29) Caden Lopez of Graceland University. In the quarterfinal round, Johnston picked up his second pin of the day, defeating Zach Westerfield of Simpson (6:30). Facing a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe in the semifinals, Johnston was bested by Coby Haney of Millikin in a 7-2 decision. The freshman battled back in the consolation bracket as he won by way of an 8-3 decision over Graceland's Riley Harger for a chance in the third-place match. Johnston fell to Karter Guzman of Coe and took fourth-place in the 133-pound bracket.
The Titans will take an extended break from competition before returning to the mats on Saturday, Dec. 9, as IWU heads to Naperville, Ill. for the 59th Annual North Central College Invitational.
