Football Fades in Loss to WashU

Titans travel to North Park next weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University football team saw a tight game at the half slip away as Washington University in St. Louis spoiled IWU's Homecoming with a 38-10 setback at Tucci Stadium Saturday, Oct. 7. The Titans are now 1-4 on the year and 1-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Bears bolstered their record to 5-0 (4-0 CCIW).

The Green and White collected 230 yards of total offense with a balance of 103 rushing yards and 127 passing yards. Meanwhile, the Bears went for 349 yards of total offense, including 221 through the air. WashU finished with 128 rushing yards. IWU held a slim advantage in first downs, 16-14.

Making his first start at home, freshman quarterback Dermot Smyth (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) completed 14-of-23 passes for 82 yards. His top target was junior wide receiver Myles Kee (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis Priory), who made six catches for 34 yards.

The Titans' lone touchdown of the day came in the ground game, where senior Seth Albin (Midlothian Ill.-Oak Forest) rushed for a team-high 62 yards on 17 carries with a TD. Smyth finished with 33 rushing yards, despite being sacked four times.

Junior Josh Hlavacek (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) finished with seven stops, including two tackles for loss, while also registering 1.5 sacks and three QB hurries. Senior Arthur Chatt (La Grange, Ill.-Lyons Township) contributed a team-high eight tackles.

WashU was first on the board as the Bears finished off an eight-play, 74-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to go ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan responded with a scoring drive of its own. The 12-play effort from the Titans paid off with a 36-yard field goal from freshman Kaden Junge (Mattoon, Ill.-Mattoon).

The four-point difference carried into the second quarter, where the Bears tacked on a 35-yard field goal to bolster their advantage, 10-3, into halftime.

WashU came out strong in the third, scoring three times in the third period to bust the game open, 31-3.

The Titans found an offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter with a 16-play drive that saw IWU march 75 yards downfield. Albin punched it in for a two-yard touchdown, but it was not enough as Illinois Wesleyan fell, 38-10.

Illinois Wesleyan embarks on a two-game road trip, beginning Saturday, Oct. 14, with a bout at North Park University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
