White Fuels Women’s Soccer Past Bluejays

Titans wrap up regular season Saturday, Oct. 21, at home

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three with a much-needed College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory over Elmhurst University Wednesday night, Oct. 18, at Neis Field. The Titans (3-11-2, 2-4-1 CCIW) used a brace from sophomore Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) to blank the Bluejays (5-8-3, 0-6-1), 2-nil, and keep their CCIW Tournament hopes alive.

A scoreless opening half saw the Titans lead 10-5 in shots. Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) led the charge with three shots through the first 45 minutes.

White maneuvered through two defenders and pulled the Elmhurst goalkeeper off her line to put the Titans on the board in the 61st minute of play and break the scoreless tie. The goal marked the first of White's career.

The sophomore then extended the Green and White's lead off a pass from freshman Alexis Shackelford (Orland Park, Ill.-Marist) in the 75th minute to give IWU an added cushion. Serving up a ball from the far side, Shackelford curled a pass into the center of the 18, where White buried the insurance tally.

Elmhurst earned a corner less than 10 minutes later and even mustered a shot in the final few minutes, but the Titan defense held strong to preserve the shutout.

In all, Illinois Wesleyan enjoyed an 18-7 lead in shots, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on frame. IWU manufactured five corners to Elmhurst's two, while freshman Adriana Ruffolo (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Glenbard North) finished with two saves in her second straight shutout performance.

The Titans return to Neis Field for their final CCIW regular season contest against the conference-leading North Central College Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
