Women’s Volleyball Drops Two Matches to Pair of Ranked Opponents

Titans return to action Tuesday night, Oct. 17, against Elmhurst

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches to ranked opponents Saturday, Oct. 14. The Titans (7-12) opened the tournament with a loss to undefeated No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (25-0), falling in four sets with scores 25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16. In the final match of the tournament, IWU fell to No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18).

Sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) was named to the all-tournament team after accumulating 37 kills, an average of 4.63 per set, on a .263 attack percentage, 27 digs, three total blocks, three assists, and two aces in eight sets played.

Facing the No. 2 team in the nation, Illinois Wesleyan was outnumbered in kills (59-51), assists (56-39), hitting percentage (.237-.131), and digs (79-65), but held the advantage in aces (7-4) and blocks (8-6). 

French led the offense with an 18-kill, 17-dig double-double performance, while hitting .333 for the match. Junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) added seven kills, while four Titans recorded four kills in the contest. Senior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) led the match with 30 assists and four aces. 

On the defensive side, sophomore Raegan Watts (Forsyth, Ill.-Maroa Forsyth) led the match with 22 digs, tying her career-high. After French, Pierce finished third on the team with eight digs. Harrington led the net defense for IWU, recording five total blocks. Freshmen Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) and Paige Peterson (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) each finished with four.

In the second match of the day, the Titans were held to a .175 attack percentage, while the Bears hit .277. The stats were well-balanced, with WashU holding a slight edge in kills (55-52), assists (51-48), and digs (72-69), while IWU had the advantage in blocks (8-3), and each team posted eight aces. 

Similar to the first match of the day, French powered the offense, finishing with a match-high 19 kills on a .211 clip. Harrington and senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) each finished with nine. Harrington notched a .304 attack percentage for the match. Pierce posted a 21-assist, 12-dig double-double performance for the Green and White. Freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and junior Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) finished with eight and seven assists, respectively. Watts and freshman Olivia deGuzman (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Divine Savior Holy Angels) each recorded two aces. 

Defensively, Watts led the team with 17 digs, while deGuzman matched her career-high of 12. French finished with 10 to record her second double-double of the day. Peterson led Illinois Wesleyan with five blocks, while Harrington and senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) each added three. 

The Titans return to action Tuesday night, Oct. 17, against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Elmhurst University. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Shirk Center.
