Shumaker’s Late Goal Lifts Titans Past Big Blue

Titans host North Park Saturday, Oct. 11

DECATUR, Ill. - An 88th-minute goal from junior Logan Shumaker (Decatur, Ill.-Mount Zion) pushed the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team past College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Millikin University, 2-1, Wednesday night, Oct. 11, at Frank M. Lindsay Field.

Illinois Wesleyan (4-4-3, 2-1-2 CCIW) struck first, taking the lead in the 25th minute. Kick started by a punt from sophomore Sam Kedzior (Cary, Ill.-Cary Grove), the Titans quickly moved forward on the counter. Senior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) headed the ball forward to fellow senior CJ Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, Calif.-Dos Pueblos) who then passed a through ball to junior Eli Warren (Mahomet, Ill.-Mahomet Seymour). Warren corralled the ball off the defender and buried a shot in the back of the net from 20 yards out to push IWU ahead, 1-nil.

Kedzior opened the second half of action with a thrilling save on a Big Blue penalty kick, as the Cary, Ill. native denied the shot to keep the 1-0 IWU lead intact.

Millikin fought back however, scoring in the 60 minute mark to even the score at one apiece.

With two minutes left in the game, Illinois Wesleyan capitalized on a free kick at midfield for the game-winner. Corralling the ball from a header from Tylnyy, Shumaker fired a shot past the keeper from 25 yards out to secure the 2-1 victory in thrilling fashion.

Kedzior, the reigning College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week, ended the game with three saves and only one goal allowed.

The Titans return to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 14, against North Park University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will serve as the second part of a double feature with the IWU women's soccer team.
