Men’s Hoops Falls at Carthage

Titans sit at 6-6 on the season, host Millikin Wednesday night

KENOSHA, Wis. - A halftime deficit proved too much to overcome as the Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team fell 69-48 at Carthage College Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, inside Tarble Arena. The Titans stumble to 6-6 on the year and 3-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with the loss, while the Firebirds improve to 11-2 (4-1 CCIW) and remain tied atop the league standings.

The Titans could not find consistency on offense, shooting just 31.7 percent from the floor (20-for-63) and 1-of-19 from beyond the arc. IWU converted 7-of-11 free throws. The Firebirds connected on 50 percent of its shots (27-for-54), including nine triples, and went 6-of-9 at the free throw line.

The Green and White held a 42-31 rebounding advantage, but saw the Firebirds own an 18-12 edge in turnovers. IWU held a 13-4 lead in second chance points and a 7-2 advantage in transition. Carthage owned a 17-11 upperhand in bench scoring, a 34-28 lead in points in the paint, and a 13-6 tally in points off turnovers.

Senior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) recorded a double-double in the loss, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) joined Mitchell in double figures with 10 points.

Carthage used a 9-0 run and a six and a half minute-long IWU scoring drought to take control, 35-23, at halftime. The Firebirds drilled a three-pointer, their sixth of the half, with five seconds left to stretch the lead to double digits.

Sophomore Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) slipped a pass to fellow sophomore Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) for a layup with 19:08 to play in regulation. The bucket snapped a seven-minute long scoring drought and marked IWU's first bucket since Mitchell's dunk with 6:28 to play in the opening half.

The Titans continued to be plagued by shooting woes in the second half though, as the Firebirds pulled away.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Wednesday night, Jan. 11, for a 7 p.m. tilt against Millikin University inside the Shirk Center.
