Heller's Career-High Highlights 700th Program Win

Four Titans score in double figures

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Twenty-point showings from senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) and sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) powered the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 78-69 win over Augustana College Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans trailed for all of six seconds, an early three-pointer by the Vikings, as IWU improved to 9-8 on the year and 4-4 in conference games, while earning the program's 700th win. Augie dipped to 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and 10-6 on the season as the Vikings saw their win streak halted at three.

Heller went off for a career-high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Huber poured in 20 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) tallied 12 points and a team-high five steals, while junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) added 11 points and six rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan put together a strong offensive performance, going 45.6 percent from the floor and 73.3 percent at the free throw line. IWU made 4-of-14 threes (28.6 percent) to Augie's 7-for-28 (25 percent). AC finished 25-for-62 from the field (40.3 percent) and went 12-for-14 in FT attempts.

The Green and White held a commanding 39-33 lead on the glass, while each team finished with 13 steals. IWU held a 38-30 lead in points in the paint, but Augie held the upperhand in bench scoring, 37-14. Points off turnovers (23), second chance points (8), and fastbreak points (11) were even.

The Titans used a 9-of-10 showing at the free throw line to overcome a slow start offensively. Illinois Wesleyan hit two three-pointers, both of which came from White, while Heller went for nine points in the opening frame as IWU took a 19-9 lead.

The Vikings pulled within as few as five in the second quarter, but Knutson and senior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) converted back-to-back buckets to extend the advantage to double digits. Heller tacked on an and-one with three seconds on the clock to send the home team into halftime up, 36-25.

IWU came out hot in the third, shooting 9-for-18 in the period to break the game open. Heller continued to have her way with the Viking defense before Huber erupted for a nine-point run to grow the Illinois Wesleyan lead to 48-33.

The Green and White held a comfortable cushion from there, taking a 10-point into the final quarter.

Augustana mounted a late comeback behind efficient shooting, but Illinois Wesleyan held on for the 78-69 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan enjoys a week-long break before returning to action at Wheaton College next Saturday, Jan. 21. Tipoff between the Titans and Thunder is set for 5 p.m. inside King Arena.
