Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Huber Comes Through Late to Lift Women's Hoops Past Wheaton

Huber hit game-winning shot with six seconds to play

WHEATON, Ill. - A clutch bucket from sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) with six seconds propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team past Wheaton College, 56-54, Saturday evening, Jan. 21 at King Arena. With the key win, IWU moved to 10-8 on the season and 5-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Huber put up a monster game for the Green and White, finishing with a 21-point, 16-rebound double-double. Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) added 11 points and eight boards, while senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) and freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic)  added 10 points apiece. Heller tallied a team-high four assists and also led the squad with three steals, while pulling in five rebounds.

The Titans finished with a 43-42 lead in rebounding and won the turnover battle, 16-14. IWU finished 22-for-61 from the floor, with four three-pointers, while WC went 20-of-64 overall and 6-for-21 from distance.

Illinois Wesleyan quieted the Thunder (10-8, 5-4 CCIW) in the opening period, charging ahead 10-4 into the second.

Wheaton used a pair of three-pointers to pull within three, 14-11. A free throw and bucket by Huber along with an and-one from Knutson extended IWU's cushion to nine, 20-11, with 3:08 remaining in the half.

The Thunder finished off the period on a 9-2 run, with a jumper by Knutson marking the half's final points as the Titans went into the break with a 22-20 edge.

Knutson paced the Green and White in the opening 20 minutes of action, with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Wheaton used a two-minute IWU scoring drought to claim a 35-30 lead, midway through the third. Senior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) ended the run with a jumper from the baseline to cut the deficit to three at the media timeout.

With the Thunder stretching the difference to six, Huber and White drilled back-to-back threes to even the score at 38 all. White then chased down a loose ball offensive rebound and banked in the putback before the buzzer to send IWU into the fourth quarter clinging to a 41-40 edge.

Wheaton reclaimed the lead in the fourth, but Huber's second triple of the game with 5:39 left gave the Green and White a 50-47 advantage. Heller drove baseline and found Huber beyond the arc in front of the IWU bench for the go-ahead three, which was followed by a 10-footer from Carlson.

The Thunder used a seven-point run to even the score at 54 all. Wheaton cashed in on an Illinois Wesleyan turnover with a game-tying triple with 10 seconds to play.

Out of a Mia Smith timeout, the Titans put the ball in the hands of Huber. The sophomore drove left, faked a kick-out, and hit a well-contested layup to lift IWU to a 56-54 edge with six ticks left on the clock.

The Green and White held the Thunder to a miss late as Carlson pulled in the rebound, sealing a 56-54 victory.

IWU is next in action Wednesday night, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. when the Titans host North Park University inside the Shirk Center.
