Men's Hoops Uses Three-Ball to Sink Augie

Titans improve to 5-2 in the CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Four double-digit showings fueled the Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team past Augustana College, 65-50, Saturday evening, Jan. 14, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans climbed to 8-6 on the season and 5-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while the Vikings dropped to 4-12 (2-5 CCIW).

Senior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) paced IWU with 21 points, aided by six three-pointers, to go along with four assists and three steals. Junior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) went for 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while senior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) and sophomore Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

IWU finished the game 24-for-53 from the field, 11-for-29 from three-point range, and 6-for-10 at the free throw line. The Green and White defense stymied the Vikings as Augie shot just 29.5 percent (18-of-61) from the floor and 3-for-25 from beyond the arc. AC did capitalize at the free throw line, going 11-for-15 (73.3 percent).

The Titans finished the game with a 40-34 rebounding advantage, while also holding leads in points in the paint (16-10), second chance points (9-7), fast break scoring (6-3), and bench points (13-7).

Illinois Wesleyan scored the game's first seven points, before Augie drilled a three. Heflen answered with his second trey of the game, this one on a dish from Bazzell, pushing the Titans ahead, 10-3, five and a half minutes into the game.

Bazzell stretched the lead to double digits with a three-ball with 13:40 to play, but the Vikings rallied back to pull within six at the half, 27-21.

Augustana took its first lead of the game behind three straight buckets to open the second half and claim a 28-27 edge less than two minutes in.

The Titan senior duo of Heflen and Mitchell stepped up from there, as Heflen hit three straight triples to swing things back in favor of the Green and White. Mitchell capped the 11-0 IWU run with a jumper, to put the home team on top 38-28 with 15:50 on the clock.

Augie pulled within four a few times in the middle part of the period, but Illinois Wesleyan did not allow the Vikings to get any closer.

A baseline pull-up jumper from Bazzell put the Titans up 56-43, with four minutes left in regulation. The Green and White never looked back from there, fighting through a barrage of fouls to earn a 65-50 victory.

IWU wraps up its three-game homestand Wednesday night, Jan. 18, with a 7 p.m. CCIW contest against North Park University.
