Women's Hoops Downed in Decatur

Titans host Augustana Saturday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team was spurned by a second-quarter deficit in a loss at Millikin University Wednesday night, Jan. 11. The Titans (8-8, 3-4 CCIW) led by three after one quarter, but the Big Blue (12-3, 6-0 CCIW) used a strong second period to take control as IWU stumbled, 66-57.

Junior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) put up 12 points in her first game of the New Year, while also tallying four steals and four rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) finished with team-highs of 14 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) added 13 points.

The Green and White shot 33.9 percent from the floor (21-of-62) and went 4-for-17 from distance. IWU finished 11-for-17 at the free throw line, but was plagued by 23 turnovers. Millikin connected on 40 percent of its shot attempts (26-for-65) and converted 5-of-16 three-point tries. The Big Blue went 9-for-14 at the free throw line and mounted a 41-30 edge on the glass.

Illinois Wesleyan used five points from Knutson to charge ahead 7-2 in the first quarter before Millikin trimmed the lead to one, 9-8, with just under four minutes to go in the period. Senior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) and Huber hit back-to-back buckets out of the break, as IWU took a 13-10 lead into the second.

The second quarter belonged to the Big Blue, as the Titans were outscored 27-16 in the frame. Millikin went 9-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc to take a 37-29 lead into halftime.

The two teams battled bucket-for-bucket in the second half, as the second-quarter deficit proved too much to overcome.

Illinois Wesleyan will return home for the first time in 2023 Saturday, Jan. 14, as the Titans take on Augustana College at 2 p.m.
