Midwest Tournament Kicks Off Home Opener for Women's Soccer

Titans joined by Wartburg, UW-La Crosse, and Dominican

9/8/2022 2:59:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team will play host to the Midwest Tournament Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11 for the Titans' home opener. Wartburg College, No. 13 the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Dominican University will travel to Bloomington for the two-day invite at Neis Field. A tournament central page can be found here.

The Titans will open the tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. against Wartburg, followed by No. 13 UW-La Crosse playing Dominican at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, IWU will face the ranked UW-La Crosse for a noon start, with the final game of the tournament scheduled for 2 p.m., as Wartburg takes on Dominican. Every team entering the tournament holds an undefeated record thus far. Both UWL and WC are 3-0 on the year, Dominican sits at 1-0-2, and the Titans at 1-0-1.

In the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, UW-La Crosse came in at No. 13 announced by the committee, Aug. 2. The Eagles finished its 2021 campaign with a 16-4-4 record and went as far as the quarterfinals in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) was recognized as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Offensive Player of the Week Sept. 6, in the conference's first weekly awards of the 2022 season. Steffens tallied five points credited to two goals and one assist over a two-game span. This distinction marked the seniors fourth time in her career garnering a weekly award and 73rd time in program history. The Normal, Ill. native leads the Titans in points with five and is tied for most goals with sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) with two apiece.

The Green and White have little history with the Knights of Wartburg, only playing once before in the 2021 season. Wartburg carries a slight 1-0 advantage in the all-time record over the Titans due to a 2-0 loss, Sept. 11, 2021. Despite IWU outshooting the Knights, two first-half goals by WC sealed the deal.

Similarly to the 2021 campaign, IWU will play UW-La Crosse the day after a 90 minute match against Wartburg. IWU has played the Eagles four times dating back to 2017. Trailing in the all-time series, 1-2-1, IWU last played UWL Sept. 12, 2021 and were blanked, 4-0. Similar to Wartburg, the Titans outshot the Eagles 13-10 (9-6 SOG), but it was not enough to stray from a shutout.

All games will be available via live stream and live stats. The live stream can be found here with live stats available here. To stay up to date on Titan women's soccer make sure to follow @IWUWomensSoccer on Twitter and @iwu_womens_soccer on Instagram.
