Women’s Soccer Secures First Win of the Season

Titans dominated, 5-1 on the road

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team secured its first win of the 2022 season against Knox College, 5-1 Sunday, Sept. 4. The Titans saw four different goal scorers and kept the Prairie Fire to one shot after a full 90 minutes of play. The Green and White hold a 1-0-1 record as Knox slipped to 0-2.

Just 2:26 into the game sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township), grabbed the Titans first goal on IWU's first offensive attempt.

Ahead 1-0, senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) placed the ball in the back of the net to put IWU up by two. Shanks battled past two Knox defenders off a through ball to find the back of the net with 23 minutes remaining in the half.

Fifth-year senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scored IWU's first-half insurance goal at the 35 minute mark. The Normal, Ill. native drove down the line to beat the Prairie Fire defender, scoring low and hard inside the post.

After 45 minutes of play IWU was in front, 3-0. A combination of a steady offense and strong defense, the Titans tallied a total of 14 shots in the first half (10 SOG) and forced the Knox keeper to make seven saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) was aided by her defensive line not facing a single shot during the first half.

Knox kept from getting shut out after being awarded a penalty kick at the 75th minute mark. Although the Titans quickly answered back as Steffens tallied her second of the day to widen the lead back to three, 4-1 for IWU.

Former Knox player, now Titan senior Jenna Li (Haslett Mich.-Lansing Christian School) closed out the game for IWU with a goal of her own as IWU walked away with a 5-1 victory.

IWU finished with a total of 26 shots and 19 on frame, keeping Knox to one. Li, Steffens, and Matimore led the Titans with five shots each. Steffens and Matimore also lead the Titans in goals with two apiece this season.

IWU is set to open at home as host of the Illinois Wesleyan Midwest Tournament Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11. The Titans will play Wartburg College at 11 a.m. Saturday and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at noon Sunday.
