Women’s Soccer Knocked off by Knights

Titans return to action tomorrow, for a 12 p.m. kickoff

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Wartburg College in the Titans' home opener, Saturday, Sept. 10. The Titans have a quick turnaround as they will compete against No. 13 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse tomorrow, Sept. 11 at noon. The Titans moved to 1-1-1 on the season while Wartburg continued to its untouched record, 4-0.

The Titans held the majority of the possession in the first half, and outshot the Knights seven to six, with both teams tallying three shots on frame. An even first 45 saw both sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) and Wartburg's goalkeeper grab three saves. Borg stood strong between the posts late in the first half to keep the game scoreless at the break.

IWU was kept to its defending third as Wartburg found a rhythm in the second half. The Green and White were tasked with a comeback early in the second half by the Knights. Around the 46:22 mark WC found the back of the Titan net to take the first lead of the game 1-0. Shortly after Wartburg net its second of the day to grow the deficit to two, 2-0 before recording an extra insurance goal at the 59:41 mark.

Trailing 3-0 with around 15 minutes to go, senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) drew a foul within the Knights 18-yard box for the Titans best-chance of the day. A goalkeeper's best friend, Steffens shot one off the post as Wartburg kept the lead, 3-0.

A few close late attempts by the Titans were not enough as IWU took its first loss on the season, 3-0.

The Titans return to Neis Field tomorrow Sunday, Sept, 11 to take on No. 13 UW-La Crosse on day two of the Midwest Tournament. The Titans will take on the Eagles at noon.
