Women’s Soccer Edges 13th-Ranked UW-La Crosse

Women’s Soccer Edges 13th-Ranked UW-La Crosse Shanks & Timerman score in win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up its first home win of the season, as well as its first under head coach Oz Bakirdan Sunday, Sept. 11, on day two of the Midwest Tournament at Neis Field. The Titans (2-1-1) took down 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a 2-1 victory. IWU's win marked the first loss of the season for UWL (4-1-0).

The Green and White struck first as freshman Maya Basan (Skokie, Ill.-Warren Township) played a ball to senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) in the middle of the field. Controlling the ball out of the air, Shanks ran through the UWL backline before ripping a shot into the back of the net in the seventh minute. The goal, which was Shanks' second of the year, put IWU up, 1-nil, in the seventh minute.

The Eagles wasted little time striking back however, as UW-La Crosse used back-to-back corners to manufacture the equalizer. After the initial corner was deflected out, the second service from UWL's Claire Cater found the head of Ainsley Allan to knot the score at one with 8:09 on the clock.

The next 20 minutes saw the Eagles continue to test sophomore keeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) and the Titan defense. UWL won a challenge in the midfield and quickly pushed forward for a breakaway opportunity, which was ultimately thwarted by a Borg save.

Illinois Wesleyan net the game-winner moments later as sophomore Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) tucked a shot under the crossbar in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) led Timerman with a ball out of the midfield to set up for the shot from the top of the 18.

Leading 2-1 out of the half, the Titans withstood eight Eagle corners and 12 shots in the final 45 to hold off UWL, 2-1.

Borg finished the game with eight saves as UWL outshot IWU, 21-16, but it was the Titans who held a 12-9 edge in shots on target.

Illinois Wesleyan will enjoy an extended break before returning to action Tuesday, Sept. 20, with a non-conference road bout at Albion College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. ET.
