Women’s Soccer Draws at Albion in Non-Conference Matchup

Titans open conference play Saturday, Sept. 20 at Carthage

ALBION, Mich. - The Illinois Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team saw a scoreless, 0-0 tie against Albion College Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Titans registered its second tie of the season to move to 2-1-2 on the season as Albion remains undefeated with a 3-0-3 season record.

The Titans and Britons went back and forth in possession in the first half. IWU held a slight advantage on the attack, creating four shots, three on frame, compared to AC's two with one on target.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove), came up big for the Titans in Albion's solo shot on frame. AC was awarded a free kick 30 yards out from the Titan goal where Borg pushed it up and out to deny the Britons' shot.

The Green and White kept pushing its attack into AC's half, but were halted by the Britons back line. Senior Lauren Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) created one of the better chances for the Titan offense. Shanks shot one hard and low to force the Albion keeper to make a save.

With 10 minutes to go in half, the Titans got their first corner of the game which saw freshman Bree Cordray (Bloomington, Ill.-University) controlling the bouncing ball 20 yards out. Cordray shot it on target but the Albion keeper put a stop to the IWU attack. At the end of 45 minutes played, the match stood tied, 0-0.

In the second half, IWU kept most of the possession in its attacking third but could not find the game winning goal. Defensively, Borg once again made a big play. With eight minutes remaining the McHenry, Ill. native ran out to challenge a breakaway and cleared the ball out of danger.

IWU recorded nine additional shots for a total of 13 and forced the Albion keeper to make nine saves. The Britons notched a total of five shots, with one on goal as neither team could make it count to end the game tied, 0-0.

The Titans next match marks the start of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play as IWU challenges Carthage College Saturday, Sept. 24 in Kenosha, Wis. for a 5 p.m. kick off. The women's squad are the first leg of a double header with the IWU men's soccer team scheduled to start right after at 7:30 p.m.
