Men’s Soccer Sets Sights on Non-Conference Finale with Wabash

Record sits at 3-4-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer continues its 2022 campaign Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Neis Field in Bloomington against non-conference opponent Wabash College. Kickoff is set for under the lights at 7 p.m. Entering the non-conference finale, the Green and White's record sits at 3-4-1 (0-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), while the Little Giants own an overall record of 8-2, who are on a four-game win streak.

These two programs have only met on the pitch on three occasions, with Wabash owning a 3-0 all-time series record. Tuesday's matchup will mark the first time both schools have met in nearly 30 years, with the last meeting taking place on Oct. 6, 1992 that saw a 4-1 Little Giants victory. 

The Titans last competed on Saturday, Sept. 24 in the team's CCIW opener against Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. Freshman Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga.-Marist School) scored in the second minute to give IWU an early 1-0 cushion. The Firebirds went on to score three unanswered goals to claim the 3-1 victory. 

On the flip side, Wabash, who is currently riding a four-game winning streak, also last took to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 24. The Little Giants began North Coast Athletic Conference action by taking on Oberlin College. Wabash welcomed three second half tallies to secure the 3-2 win as the game-winner was earned in the 66th minute.  

In the CCIW, Illinois Wesleyan sits in a tie for fourth with a 1.750 goals per game average. For the year, IWU has accumulated 86 shots (10.8 shots per contest), while its opponents have notched 134 shots (16.8 shots per game). However, the Titans have a higher shots on goal percentage (.488) when compared to its opponents (.410). 

Junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) is currently in a tie for sixth in the conference with his lone game-winning goal against Aurora on Sept. 10.

Sophomore Spencer Fulton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) ranks seventh in the CCIW for the year as the Bloomington, Ill. native has accumulated a 2.071 goals allowed per contest clip. 

On the year, Smith and junior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) have each racked up six points to lead the Green and White. Smith has tallied a pair of goals and assists, while Tylnyy has been credited with three goals.
