Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day of Illinois Wesleyan Classic II Tournament

Record sits at 10-3 after today’s action

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team competed in the final day of action at the program's second of three home tournaments, Sept. 24. The Green and White took on Heidelberg University at 10:30 a.m. and wrapped up play against fifteenth-ranked UW-Whitewater at 1:30 p.m. inside the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan.

The Titans defeated the Student Princes of Heidelberg in straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) in the morning match. In the night cap, UW-Whitewater put an end to the Green and White's eight-match winning streak by claiming the four set (12-25, 25-18, 17-25, 19-25) victory. After today's play, IWU's record now sits at 10-3.

Match 1: IWU vs. Heidelberg (25-18, 25-22, 25-16)

The Green and White welcomed advantages in almost every statistical category, including kills (45-26), aces (7-0), assists (43-25), and digs (46-42). As a team, IWU complied a .231 hitting percentage with a match-high clip of .419 in the opening frame, compared to the Student Princes' .109 percentage.

The Titan offense wasted little time gaining the upper hand in the contest by earning the first six-of-seven points that included kills from senior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill.-Sandburg) and freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East), as well as aces from French and junior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) to race out to a quick 6-1 cushion. With the score sitting at 23-14 in favor of the home team, HU assembled a four point run to trim the Titan lead to 23-18. However, the run was thwarted with back-to-back Green and White points with a French kill and a Student Prince miscue. IWU claimed the first frame with a score of 25-18.

At the mid-way point of the second set, the visitors clung to a slim 14-11 advantage. A kill from senior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumberg, Ill.-Schaumberg) and a pair from junior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) knotted the score at 14 all. IWU took the lead and widened the cushion to 18-15 heading into the ladder stages of the set. The Titans would never relinquish the advantage as a Heidelberg error ended the second set, 25-22, to push the match in the Green and White's favor.

The third set saw back and forth action in the opening half as the score stood at 11 apiece. A massive seven point run from the Titans created a comfortable cushion that featured four kills, two Student Prince errors, and an ace to push the score to 18-11. Back-to-back kills from Summers and sophomore Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) ended the match as IWU took the third and final set by a score of 25-16.

French paced the offense with her match-high dozen kills. Harrington, who hammered home the final point in the victory, was credited with 10 kills as Summers assembled a seven kill morning.

Sophomore Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) dished out a match-high 19 assists, while her setter counterpart, junior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) tallied 16 assists.

Washko, continued her stat-stuffing season, and tied the match-high with her 18 dig performance. French and Summers notched seven and five digs, respectively.

Junior Taylor Babec (Joilet, Ill.-Plainfield) made her presence known at the service line as the Joilet, Ill. native enjoyed a trio of aces.

Match 2: IWU vs. No.15 UW-Whitewater (12-25, 25-18, 17-25, 19-25)

No. 15 UW-Whitewater held advantages in kills (55-34), aces (7-6), blocks (9-6), assists (55-32), and digs (73-58). The Titans accumulated a .099 hitting percentage, compared to UWW's .221 clip.

The Warhawks quickly claimed a 14-6 lead in the opening frame and never looked back as the visitors won the first set, in convincing fashion, with a score of 25-12.

A head coach Kim Nelson-Brown intermission pep talk heading into the second set paid dividends as IWU scored five unanswered points to even the score at seven-all in the early goings. The turning point of the set came as the Green and White faced a slim, 11-10 deficit that was rapidly turned into a lead thanks to a five point run to claim the 15-11 cushion. The Titans would never relinquish the second set lead as back-to-back Warhawk miscues paved the way to the 25-18 win to even the match at one apiece.

UW-Whitewater took the third and fourth sets as the Titans were unable to push its win streak to nine. The Warhawks took the third set with a score of 25-17 and finished the match with a fourth set score of 25-19.

French manufactured a match-high 16 kills in the setback.

Makris rejected the Warhawk hitters on five occasions, while Harrington and Summers notched two and one rejections, respectively.

Erdman and Pierce accumulated 25 assists, with Erdman notching 14 and Pierce accumulating 11 assists.

On the defensive side, Washko was credited with a match-high 25 digs.

The Green and White are next scheduled to compete on Friday, Sept. 30 in Rock Island, Ill. as the Titans will travel to take on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe, Augustana College. The first set of the CCIW match is slated for 7 p.m. inside of the Carver P.E. Center.
