Women’s Volleyball Defeats Wittenberg in Season Opener

Titans win in straight sets

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team began play at the Charlie Wrublewski Invitational Friday, Sept. 2 with a win against Wittenberg University to open the season. The Titans defeated Wittenberg in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-23) in the first of three games to be played in Cincinnati. IWU holds a 1-0 overall record as the Titans head into day two of the tournament while Wittenberg stands at 1-1 record.

Senior Evy Makris (Orland Park, Ill. - Sandburg) and freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill. - Plainfield East) led the offensive attack with nine kills each. French also added three service aces and an assist to open her collegiate career. Senior Dana Kiszkowski (Schaumburg, Ill. - Schaumburg) had a strong day in the front row with seven kills and a block assist. 

Junior Courtney Heffren (Eureka, Ill. - Eureka) led the Titans in digs with 17. Freshman Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis. - Pewaukee) also had an impressive first game donning the Green and White jersey with 18 assists and an ace. 

As a team, the Titans had 39 kills and 11 blocks. The back row added six aces to a productive game for the Green and White. 

IWU returns to the court tomorrow for a pair of games against Mount St. Joseph, and Earlham at 10 a.m. ET and 12 p.m. ET, respectively. Links to live stats and a livestream can be found here
