Men’s Soccer Earns Hard Fought Draw with Oglethorpe

Brody Seaton produced the equalizer

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team began its season by competing in the Sonny Carter Invitational, hosted by Emory University. The Titans took on Oglethorpe in the first game of the tournament, Friday, Sept. 2. IWU's timely goal in the 52nd minute pushed the game to a draw as the Titans and Stormy Petrels ended with a final tally of 1-1. OU and the Green and White's record both stand at 0-0-1 on the young season.

OU tallied twice as many shots at the Titans, with a 26-13 mark. Oglethorpe assembled 13 shots in each half and registered nine shots on goal compared to IWU's two.

Oglethorpe notched the first goal of the game in the 25th minute to give OU a 1-0 advantage heading into the intermission.

With the Titans entering the second 45 being down 1-0, junior Brody Seaton (Dunalp, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) found the back of the net to tie the game. Brody scored his first goal in his short Illinois Wesleyan career, during the 52nd minute to knot the match at one all.

Sophomore Spencer Fulton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) earned the start in goal for the Green and White. Fulton accumulated a match-high eight saves.

A flurry of offensive action in the final 15 minutes by Oglethorpe was thwarted by the tenacious Titan defense that kept the game knotted at one. A corner kick by OU in the final seconds was cleared out of the zone, as the first match for both sides ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Green and White will see a quick turnaround, playing its only-back-to-back game of the season by taking on the tournament hosts, Emory, with a start time of 4:30 p.m. EST.
