Men’s Soccer Drops Finale of Sonny Carter Invitational to Emory

Titans set to play Monmouth Sept. 7

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team wrapped up play in the 2022 Sonny Carter Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., Saturday, Sept. 3. The Green and White took on the hosts' of the tournament, Emory University. The Eagles defeated IWU by a final score of 3-0. With the setback, Emory claimed its first victory of the season, improving to 1-0-1, while Illinois Wesleyan's record slipped to 0-1-1 on the year.

Junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) and sophomore Justin Hart (Morton, Ill.-Morton) were named to the all-tournament for thier tremendous effforts on the pitch.

Emory outshot the Titans 18-5 (6-2 SOG), including 13 shots in the first half. Both squads were whistled for five infractions, while the Eagles owned a slim edge, 5-4, in corner chances.  

EU cracked the scoreboard in the 14th minute to snag the early 1-0 lead. The match remained scoreless as the game progressed into the half. 

In the second half, the persistent Emory defense kept the Titan attack at bay as the EU goalkeeper was credited with a pair of saves. However, the Eagles tallied two goals in under four minutes to take a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into the 72nd minute. 

In the end, the lead proved too much to overcome as the hosts', Emory, enjoyed a 3-0 victory. 

Sophomore Spencer Fulton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) played all 90 minutes for IWU in front of the net and was credited with three saves, all which came in the first half.

Seaton registered a pair of shots for the Titans' offense, including one shot on goal. Junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) notched IWU's other shot on frame.

The Titans will trek back to the Midwest to take on Monmouth College, Wednesday, Sept. 7. The match is set for 4 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill.
