Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer’s Flair for Dramatic Continues in Wild Victory Over Knox

Seaton drilled game winner with 56 seconds remaining

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - With 56 ticks left on the clock, junior Brody Seaton (Dunlap, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) hit an upper 90 bender to seal the deal, 4-3, for the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team against Knox College Tuesday evening, Sept. 13 at Neis Field in Bloomington, Ill. With the team's third consecutive victory, the Green and White's record improved to 3-1-1, while KC's record dropped to 1-6.

The Titans striked for two goals in the opening 45. In the 28th minute, freshman Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga.-Marist School) settled a ball off of his chest and to his feet, before delivering a perfect ball to junior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) who found a crease in the Prairie Fire defense. The junior delivered a low screamer of a shot, passing several defensmen and struck the back of the nylon to crack the scoreboard, 1-0, in the early goings.

After a Knox penalty kick tied things up just 90 seconds after Tylnyy's strike, the Green and White earned a corner in the 37th minute. Sophomore Mush Bakirdan (Morton, Ill.-Morton) placed the corner service perfectly as he found a leaping sophomore Justin Hart (Morton, Ill.-Morton) for the header over the outstretched arms of the Prairie Fire goalkeeper to retake the 2-1 advantage.

The score remained the same heading into the intermission. Knox accumulated seven shots while IWU tallied six, but it was the Titans who clung to a one-goal advantage.

Out of the half time break, Knox buried back-to-back goals to reclaim the lead, 3-2, heading into the final 25 minutes of action.

With the Titans on their heels, in need of an equalizer, sophomore Logan Shumaker (Decatur, Ill.-Mount Zion) picked the perfect time for his first goal of the season. Shumaker, who was on the left side of the pitch, settled a bouncing ball to his boot, and fired a rocket from just beyond the 18-yard box. As a result, the ball soared into the upper right hand part of the net as the score, again, was tied 3-3.

The excitement was just building as the Titans pushed into a gritty offensive mindset. The added pressure caused the Prairie Fire's defense to shift, allowing Seaton a narrow lane for his game-winner as the ball bent back and found the goal with just 56 seconds left. Junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) notched the helper with his pass from the center of the 18-yard box.

IWU was able to hold off Knox for the final seconds off the ensuing restart, as the buzzer sounded as the Titans stunned the Prairie Fire, 4-3, for the team's third straight victory.

Sophomore Spencer Fulton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) entered the match in the second half and recorded one save in earning the victory between the posts.

KC outshot the Green and White by a clip of 15-7, with both squads tallying seven shots on goal. The Prairie Fire held the upper hand in corners as they assembled 10 to IWU's six.

The Titans will trek to Dubuque, Iowa in search of their four straight win for the teams next competition to take on Loras College Saturday, Sept. 17. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Rock Bowl.
