Titans Cap Off Home Tournament with Two Wins

Washko named tournament MVP

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fought hard to pick up two wins today, Sept, 10, to complete a weekend sweep at its own two-day tournament. The Titans (5-2) ran their win streak to three with four-set victories over Greenville College and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) and sophomore Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) were both named to the All-Tournament Team, while junior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) was crowned the Tournament MVP after her stellar weekend.

The Titans won a challenging four-set match against Greenville, behind a stellar 40-dig performance by Washko, to open the day (25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23). Washko's 40 digs against the Panthers (3-4) established a Titan record for digs in a four-set match, previously held by Loryn Bruer with 38 digs against Carthage on Sept. 21, 2013.

Illinois Wesleyan ran out to a 2-0 lead, taking the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19, before Grenville claimed the third., 25-17. The Titans closed things out in the fourth with the help of five kills from French and four from junior Maddie Dryfhout (Orland Park, Ill.-Chicago Christian)

French and Dryfhout provided 15 and 14 kills for the Green and White, respectively, in the four-set win. Erdman led the Titans with a career-best 30 assists.

In the final game of the tournament, Illinois Wesleyan took down RHIT by set scores of 25-16, 25-12, 18-25, and 28-26. The Green and White dominated offensive throughout the match, but even more so in the first two sets. IWU mounted a .227 to -.043 attacking percentage advantage in the opening set, before going off for a .342 clip in the second set.

After taking the third set, the Fightin' Engineers (3-4) looked as though they were going to push to a fifth set, going up 21-16, before the Titans answered by taking six of the next seven points. Sophomore Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) came up with two key kills to fuel the comeback, helping her team secure the win with nine kills in the match. French continued her stellar weekend, adding 14 more kills and 22 digs to her name. Washko continued to amaze with 19 digs against  Rose-Hulman, giving her 84 on the weekend, an average of 6.8 digs per set.

The Titans open conference play at home against Carroll University on Wednesday, September 14. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live stats for the match can be found here and a livestream can be found here.
