Men’s Soccer Scores Twice in Final Six Minutes to Stun Spartans

Tylnyy and Smith tally goals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After a scoreless first 45, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team produced two timely goals in the final six minutes to earn the wild win, 2-1, against Aurora University Saturday, Sept. 10 at Neis Field in Bloomington, Ill. With the victory, IWU's record jumped to 2-1-1, while the Spartans' clip slipped to 1-1-2 on the year.

After 14 combined shots in the first half, both teams went into the intermission period tied at 0-0 to regroup. The Titans nearly tallied a goal early in the second half, as a header glanced off the crossbar and out of play.

The action started to pick up in the 71st minute. Aurora capitalized on a penalty kick chance to crack the scoreboard as the Spartans took a 1-0 advantage.

However, the Green and White earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 85th minute. Junior Sasha Tylnyy (Wheeling, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) net his second goal of the season to even the score at one-all. After head coach Kyle Schauls deployed some fresh bodies into the match with only a few minutes remaining, junior Gavin Smith (Seattle, Wash.-Eastside Preparatory School) found just enough space inside of the 18-yard box to launch a shot that found the lower left corner of the goal. The Wheeling, Ill. native produced the go-ahead goal with just over 40 seconds remaining in the match. Freshman Kalabi Kamau (Alpharetta, Ga.-Marist School) earned the assist on Smith's goal with his nifty pass through traffic.

The Titans were able to thwart any comeback efforts from Aurora, as IWU cleared the ball out of its defensive third to end the game. The Green and White went on to win the contest by a final score of 2-1.

Sophomore Scott Abramson (Odessa, Fla.-Sickles) earned his first start in goal for the Green and White. Abramson hauled in nine saves in his 90 minutes of action.

The Spartans racked up 19 shots (10 on goal), compared to IWU's 16 (five on goal). AU collected eight corner chances to Illinois Wesleyan's five.

The Green and White will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 13 against Knox College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Neis Field in Bloomington.
