Women’s Soccer Draws with Simpson

Titans back on the field Sunday against Knox

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in its season opener against Simpson College Thursday, Sept. 1. The Titans and Storm both moved to 0-0-1 on the season.

The Green and White were outshot 24-16 (10-6 SOG). Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Borg (McHenry, Ill.-Cary Grove) registered nine saves compared to the Storms five.

Early in the match Borg stood big for the Green and White as Simpson broke through the back line. The McHenry, Ill. native kept the score tied at zero after a big challenge with 38 minutes to go in the first half.

With 18 minutes left in the first 45, IWU went up 1-0 as freshman Sawyer White (Downers Grove, I'll.-Montini Catholic) who intercepted a Storm pass to send the Green and White on the attack. White found senior Caelyn Steffens (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) who launched a shot at the crossbar before ultimately finding sophomore Liza Matimore (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) who knocked it in the back of the net.

Trailing 11-10 in shots, the Green and White applied the pressure to end the first half up, 1-0. Borg recorded five saves to Simpsons' four, as both teams notched five shots on goal.

The Titans maintained the lead throughout the second half. Borg tallied two more saves to keep the Green and White lead.

With under 10 minutes to go Simpson strung together a few passes to find the back of the Titans net, tying the game, 1-1.

A late IWU corner attempt challenged the Storm keeper but it wasn't enough as the game ended in a tie, 1-1.

The Titans return to action Sunday, Sept. 4 in Galesburg, as they take on Knox College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
