Men’s Soccer Heads to Atlanta to Begin 2022 Campaign

Will play Oglethorpe and Emory, Sept. 2-3

9/1/2022 11:00:00 AM

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team is gearing up for its highly anticipated Atlanta, Ga. trip, which will mark the start of the 2022 campaign for the Green and White. Head coach Kyle Schauls will be taking 24 student-athletes to compete in the 2022 Sonny Carter Invitational, hosted by Emory University, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 2-3.

The Titans will take on Oglethorpe, Friday, Sept. 2 with a start time of 4:30 p.m. EST. IWU will see a quick turnaround, playing in its only back-to-back of the season, by tangling with the host, Emory, at 4:30 p.m. EST, Saturday, Sept. 3.

This marks the second time that the program will participate in the Sonny Carter Invitational, as IWU notched a 1-1 record in the 2010 tournament.

The Green and White and Oglethorpe will write just the second chapter in the short-lived all-time series. IWU and the Stormy Petrels have met on one previous occasion, which saw the Titans claim a 4-1 victory in a match that was played in Atlanta, Sept. 5, 2010.

Comparatively, Emory and the Titans have also only played each other one time. However, the script is flipped, as the Eagles came out victorious by a final tally of 3-1, Sept. 4, 2010.

IWU is led by seven seniors, with senior Dane Hoare (Chicago, Ill.-Von Steuben) coming off of a Second Team All-College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin nomination last season. Hoare accumulated three goals and three assists, good for nine points in the 2021 slate. Meanwhile, the 2022 recruiting class welcomed 13 freshmen to the program.

As a team in the 2021 season, IWU notched 25 goals, good for 1.56 goals per game. The Titans accumulated 192 shots, 54 saves, 19 assists, and 78 corner kicks.
