Baseball Sees Ninth Inning Lead Diminish as Augie Stuns Titans

Team will host Blackburn tomorrow

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball battled College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Augustana College, Monday, May 2 at Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Green and White let a one-run lead in the ninth slip away as the Vikings escaped with the 4-3 victory. With the loss, IWU's record slipped to 16-17 (7-8 CCIW), while Augie's record jumped to 25-9 (9-6 CCIW).

Sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth as he delivered a one-out hustle double to right center field that allowed junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) to scamper around third and cross the plate to generate a 1-0 cushion. Ping led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Viking wild pitch to scoot into scoring position.

Freshman hurler Lukas Wenz (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) stranded a Viking on third base with only one away, manufacturing two weak pop ups to second baseman, senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) to keep Augustana off the board as the game progressed into the bottom of the fifth.

AC earned its first lead of the ballgame with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on two hits to claim the 2-1 advantage. Freshman Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) induced a key 4-6-3 double play to prevent any further damage.

After chasing the Viking starter out of the game in the bottom of the sixth, the Titans could not capitalize with runners on first and second and no one out. The game remained 2-1, Augie, after six innings of action.

IWU took advantage of a key two-out miscue by Augustana that allowed senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) to score all the way from first on the three base error to knot the score a two all in the bottom of the seventh. In the same inning, senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) found a pitch to his liking, driving an offering to right center that drove in Ping, who was the beneficiary of the costly error, as the Titans reclaimed the lead, 3-2.

The script was flipped in the top of the ninth as AC capitalized on a costly IWU error to tie the score at 3-3. Augustana executed a perfect bunt to bring in the go ahead run to claim the 4-3 lead.

The Vikings were able to thwart another Titan comeback attempt as AC captured the 4-3 victory.

Wenz got the nod on the bump, tossing five-and-a-third innings, allowing four hits to go along with three strikeouts and two runs. The freshman did not factor into the decision. Hartman took the loss (1-3) out of the Titan bullpen as he worked three innings.

Perona put together a 3-for-4 evening while Greer also notched a pair of base hits. IWU outhit the Vikings by a final tally of 10-8.

The Green and White will be back in action tomorrow, May 3, for a non-conference duel with Blackburn College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
