Baseball Shocked by Beavers

Record sits at 16-18

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team wrapped up their 2022 non-conference slate Tuesday, May 3 by taking on Blackburn College at Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Beavers used a four-run eighth inning to come from behind and defeat Illinois Wesleyan 9-4. With the loss, IWU's record fell to 16-18, while BC's record jumped to 10-28.

IWU accumulated three hits in the bottom of the first to race out to an early 3-0 lead. Senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) drove the second pitch of the ballgame for a leadoff triple to right center to get things rolling for the Green and White. On the next pitch, senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) laced a line drive over the outstretched arms of the shortstop to generate a 1-0 lead after just three pitches. IWU took advantage of a Beaver throwing error to up the advantage to 2-0 as senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) crossed the plate. With the bases loaded, freshman Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) reached on a fielder's choice, driving in sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) to push the cushion to 3-0.

Sophomore Garrett Swingler (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second as he induced a weak pop fly to Figus and a strikeout to end the threat as IWU maintained the 3-0 lead heading into the home half of the second.

The Beavers were able to crack the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as the offense strung together three hits to cut into the Titan lead, 3-1, going into the bottom of the fourth.

Illinois Wesleyan manufactured one run in the fifth inning as senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) delivered a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Ranneklev to scamper home, pushing IWU's advantage to 4-1.

After BC scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game at four, Blackburn used a five-hit inning to generate four runs and claim its first lead of the night, 8-4, heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Beaver bullpen shut down the Green and White offense from there, as IWU fell, 9-4.

Swingler got his first start of the season on the bump for the Titans. The sophomore tossed five innings of work while striking out three and did not factor into the decision. Freshman Morgan McFarlane (Chicago, Ill.-St. Laurence) suffered the loss (1-2) out of the bullpen.

The Beavers outhit the Titans by a final tally of 17-7. Ranneklev and Persona each produced a pair of hits to lead the offense.

The Green and White will hit the road for the final time in the 2022 regular season to take on No. 11 North Central College, Friday, May 6 in Naperville, Ill. First pitch of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin duel is set for 3 p.m.
