Men’s Lacrosse Conquers Carthage in CCIW Play

Titans improve to 3-0 in CCIW

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team defeated Carthage College 24-8 in Kenosha Saturday, April 9. The Titans improved to 7-4 (3-0 CCIW) as the Cardinals dipped to 8-4 (1-1 CCIW).

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Oximana (Seattle, Wash.-Bishop Blanchet) grabbed his first career-start for the Titans where he picked up a total of 15 saves, to tie his career-high. Sophomore Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) led the Green and White with a single game career-high and game-high five goals. Fellow sophomore Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) picked up four goals for the Titans, a single game career-high for the California native.

Black opened up the scoring for the Titans with a quick goal at the 13:08 mark to give IWU the lead that never wavered. Right after Black's goal, IWU won the battle at the faceoff x, courtesy of  senior Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), as Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) found the back of the Cardinals' net, to give IWU an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) added to the scoresheet for the Green and White after a long range shot to push the Titans to three-nil and forced a Carthage Timeout.

Out of the timeout, the Cardinals put themselves on the board as IWU kept the lead, 3-1 with around 11 minutes to go in the opening quarter. Junior Connor Kiichle found fellow junior Jaxon Hendrickson (Langley, British Columbia-Westtown) for another long range goal to widen the lead back to three, 4-1 for IWU.

Hendrickson's goal started a five-goal unanswered run for the Green and White to end the first 15, 8-1. During that five-goal run, Black gave IWU a nice 5-1 lead as team-assist leader, Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) found Black the ball from behind the net to force Carthage's second timeout of the game. The timeout was not enough as Boone then went on to score the next three goals for the Green and White. Boone netted two goal's just 37 seconds apart to give the Titans a nice 7-1 advantage. With just over a minute left in the opening quarter, The Titan defense forced a Carthage turnover as Boone picked up the ball from IWU's defending third and grabbed the hattrick, to end the quarter up, 8-1.

A strong defensive pressure kept the Carthage offense in check, limiting the Cardinals to nine shots (three SOG) to IWU's 18 (11 SOG) in the first 15 alone.

In the second quarter, IWU brought the ruckus scoring seven goals to Carthage's three. Carson Kiichle grabbed his second out of six assists on the day, after finding senior Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East). Right off of Smith's goal, Taylor won his own faceoff once more, this time taking the ball by himself as he put one behind the Cardinal's keeper to give the Titans a 10-1 lead.

IWU's double-digit goal was shortly answered by the Cardinals with two goals of their own as IWU remained ahead, 10-3 with 8:53 to go in the half. Back-to-back goals from Connor Kiichle and senior Griffin DeMilt (Toledo, Ohio.-Ottawa Hills) widened the lead, 12-3.

The Cardinals added one more goal at the 6:37 mark to put them at four, but their attempts were halted as Black scored the next two goals for the Green and White, in addition to DeMilt putting up IWU's 15th goal to end the half, 15-4. Oximana made seven saves in the second quarter to the Cardinal keeper's three.

Just under a minute in at the 14:02 mark, DeMilt grabbed his hattrick to put IWU up, 16-4. After some back and forth chances from both teams, it wasn't until the 8:48 mark where Carthage grabbed another one off a man-up opportunity, to put them at five. Carthage used that momentum to net two more goals, closing the gap, 16-7 with 4:13 to go.

Game goal-leader, Black, put another one away, followed by Smith to widen the Titans lead to 18-7. Senior Cole Harden (Terrace Park, Ohio.-Mariemont) recorded his first goal of the season with just three seconds left on the clock in the third quarter, eventually ending the period in favor of the Titans, 19-7.

The Titan defense, plus sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Hare (Littleton, Colo.-J.K. Mullen), who took over for Oximana in the final 15, kept the Cardinals to one goal for the rest of the game to IWU's five. That one goal opened the quarter at the 12:02 mark, hitting Carthage's goal threshold of the game.

Boone answered with his fifth of the day to put IWU at the 20 goal mark with 11:20 to go. Ahead 20-8, IWU's Connor Kiichle and Seeley added their third, and second goals of the day and the Titans 21st and 22nd, respectively.

Freshman Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park & River Forest) earned his first career-goals in the Green and White uniform at the 5:21 mark and once again at the 3:14 mark on a man-up opportunity to give IWU its final score of the day, 24-8.

IWU continues its road trip Wednesday, April 13 as the Titans head to Rock Island, Ill. for a game against Augustana College with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
