Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Augie in Mid-Week Matchup

Titans remain undefeated in the CCIW

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team earned its fourth-straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin win after defeating Augustana College 20-7 Wednesday, April 13. The Titans moved to 8-4 and 4-0 in the CCIW as Augie now holds an 8-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the CCIW.

The Titans were led by junior Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) who picked up three goals and four assists for a seven-point game. CCIW Offensive Player of the Week, Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) also led IWU with four goals and one assist for a five-point night. In between the posts for the Titans was sophomore Alex Oximana (Seattle, Wash.-Bishop Blanchet), who registered a total of eight saves.

The Titans opened the scoring as freshman Jake Gisi (Wentzville, Mo.-Chaminade College Prep) recorded his second goal of the year, to give IWU a 1-0 lead at the 12:09 mark. Gisi's goal sent the Titans on a six-goal unanswered run as IWU ended the first quarter ahead, 4-0, and put away two more goals to start the second quarter.

At the 7:44 mark in the second period, the Vikings kept themselves from being shutout as Augie netted its first goal of the game. Still ahead 6-1, IWU's Smith widened the lead to 7-1, but was answered by the Vikings to bring the deficit down to five, 7-2. With 35 seconds left in the half, sophomore Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) grabbed one more for the Titans, to put them up, 8-2 at the end of the half.

After almost five minutes of play in the third period, IWU capitalized on a man-up opportunity as Smith grabbed his second of the day off an assist by Connor Kiichle. Junior Jaxon Hendrickson (Langley, British Columbia-Westtown) added to the Titans' score to put them in double-digits, 10-2.

The next four goals of the game happened with under four minutes left in the third period. Augie netted its third of the night at the 3:43 mark before goals from senior Cole Harden (Terrace Park, Ohio.-Mariemont), Smith, and Gisi gave the Green and White a 13-3 advantage as they headed into the final 15.

Just 38 second into the fourth quarter, junior Carson Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) grabbed his second of the night, in addition to another Smith goal. The Vikings added another goal to their overall score, to put Augie at four as IWU still led, 15-4.

Sophomore Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) widened the gap to 10 for the Green and White, that was followed by a two-goal Augie run as the score stood at 16-6 with 8:50 to go in the game. Game point-leader, Connor Kiichle, earned his fourth of the night off an assist from brother, Carson Kiichle

Boone and Connor Kiichle stretched the Titans' already demanding lead to 19-6 just 30 seconds apart at the 3:31 and 3:01 marks, respectively. Junior Ryan Payne (Mercer Island, Wash.-Mercer Island) capped off the scoring for the Titans at 20, as the Mercer Island, Wash. native registered his first-career goal in the Green and White uniform. Augie managed to add one more before the time ran out as IWU left with the win, 20-7.

The Titans take a week off before returning to Tucci Stadium for a CCIW game against Carroll University Saturday, April 23 for a 1 p.m. start.
