Men’s Lacrosse Rolls Past Pioneers

Titans clinch share of CCIW Regular Season title with win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Carroll University was no match for the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team Saturday, April 23, as the Titans defeated the Pioneers, 27-0, in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. With the win, Illinois Wesleyan (9-4, 5-0 CCIW) claimed at least a share of the CCIW Regular Season Championship for the fourth straight season.

The Green and White wasted little time taking control, as senior Zac Taylor (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) won the opening faceoff and junior Connor Kiichle (Vancouver, Wash.-Skyview) found senior Rick Smith (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln Way East) for a goal just 12 seconds into the game. Smith tallied another 20 seconds later, and the Titans continued to pile it on to jump to a 13-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Illinois Wesleyan never looked back from there, taking the victory by a final score of 27-0.

The game saw the first career goals in the careers of freshmen John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) and Tyler Crawford (Cary, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), who net one each, and sophomore Brendan Baumgarten (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) who picked up two goals. Including Kittoe, Tyler, and Baumgarten freshman Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park & River Forest), sophomores Bob Boone (Los Angeles, Calif.-Notre Dame) and Logan Gelling (St. Michael, Minn.-Benilde), junior Everett Carstens (Tigard, Ore.-Tigard), and senior Austin Masters (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) posted career-highs in points.

The Titans were led in goals by sophomore Jayden Erie (Duluth, Minn.-Denfeld) with a career-high four. Defensively, the last time IWU recorded a shutout was in the 2015 season as the Titans defeated the University of Dallas, 22-0.

Illinois Wesleyan has a quick turnaround as the Titans take on Whittier College inside Tucci Stadium. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
