Baseball Blows By BlueJays in CCIW Sweep

Burgh earns career day at the plate in game one

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Behind the masterful complete game performance by junior Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard) and the career day from junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) at the plate, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team enjoyed a 16-4 victory in game one over Elmhurst University Saturday, April 9. The bats stayed hot as senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) threw IWU's second straight complete game as the Titans went on to win the second game of the double dip by a final score of 14-2. IWU's record jumped to 12-9 (3-1 CCIW), while EU's record slipped to 8-12 (1-5 CCIW).

Game one: Illinois Wesleyan 16, Elmhurst 4
The Green and White wasted little time manufacturing a quick lead. Back-to-back walks with the bases juiced created a 2-0 lead as senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) and Burgh earned the runs batted in. A double play to end the inning bailed out the BlueJays as the Titans were out in front, 2-0, after one half inning.

Elmhurst cut the deficit in half via an infield single in the bottom half of the second inning to make the score 2-1, in favor of the Titans.

IWU scored six runs on five hits in the third inning to push the lead to 8-1. After back-to-back perfectly executed hit and runs by the Green and White, junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) took an outside fastball and deposited it into right field, driving in senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) who scampered home to generate a 3-1 lead for IWU.

Senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) scored on a wild pitch. With two on and still no one out, Burgh delivered a single to right center, allowing Mutter and Ping to cross the plate as the lead widened to 6-1. A sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) pushed the advantage to 7-1. The Green and White scored another run off of a BlueJay miscue to enjoy an 8-1 advantage after two and a half innings.

Elmhurst cut into the Green and White's lead by plating a pair of runs to cut the Titan cushion to 8-3, after three innings of play.

Burgh continued his hot day at the plate by driving a triple off of the 380 sign on the center field fence, driving in Mutter from first base, to create a comfortable 9-3 advantage in the fourth.

The Titans welcomed back-to-back doubles, on back-to-back pitches, to plate a pair of runs to extend the lead, 11-3, heading into the bottom of the fifth.

A Burgh grand slam over the center field fence, into the trees with two outs, was the final blow for the BlueJays as the lead widened to 16-3 in the seventh inning. EU's comeback hopes were thwarted as IWU took game one with a final score of 16-4, in seven innings.

Monocchio took the win on the mound to push his record to 4-0, tossing all seven innings and enjoying his second complete game of the year. The southpaw sat down eight hitters via the strikeout, allowed eight hits, and three earned runs.

The offensive showing was led by Burgh who set a new career-high with eight driven in with his three-for-four afternoon.

The Titans outhit Elmhurst by a final tally of 15-8. IWU enjoyed advantages in extra base hits (5-1), free passes (7-3), and stolen bases (2-0).

Game two: Illinois Wesleyan 14, Elmhurst 2
IWU scored seven runs on five hits in the second inning as senior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) got the Titans on the board with a single to center field, scoring two runs. Senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) then doubled to right center, driving in sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) to push the score to 3-0. An RBI by Rannklev and DiLello expanded the lead to 5-0. The Titans would tack on two more runs in the inning to make the score 7-0, after one and a half innings of play.

The Green and White packed on three more in the third frame to open up a commanding 10-0 cushion.

Elmhurst cracked the scoreboard in the third inning as the score stood at 10-1 heading into the fourth.

The Titans pushed one more run across in the fifth and sixth innings to enjoy a 12-1 lead with the BlueJays coming to bat in the sixth.

IWU manufactured a pair of runs in the seventh inning to push the score to 14-1.

Duffy finished what he started on the rubber as the game ended with a final score of 14-2. The Pontiac, Ill. native's record improved to 3-1 on the year while only surrendering five hits.

Greer enjoyed a three-for-five afternoon as Schneider recorded a perfect three-for-three.

The team will see a quick turnaround, taking on Carthage College in another CCIW contest, tomorrow, Sunday, April 10. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
