Baseball Squeaks by Carthage to Increase Win Streak to Three

Record stands at 13-9 (4-1 CCIW)

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team continued College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, Sunday, April 10, by taking on Carthage College at Horenberger Field. This game was a make up from April 2 that was postponed due to weather. The Green and White defeated the Firebirds by a final score of 10-6, to increase the team's winning streak to three games as IWU's record jumped to 13-9 (4-1 CCIW). Carthage's record dipped to 6-17 (1-5 CCIW) with the loss.

The Titans broke the scoreless tie in the third inning as senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) singled to left field, driving in senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) and sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) to open up a 2-0 lead. In the same inning, junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) continued his scorching weekend at the plate by singling up the middle, allowing junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) and DiLello to score as the lead increased to 4-0.

Carthage battled back in their half of the fifth to tie the score at four all as the game progressed to the sixth.

The Green and White manufactured a run on a Firebird miscue to reclaim the slim, 5-4, cushion in the sixth.

Cyrus provided the Titans with two key insurance runs in the seventh by singling through the left side. The base knock allowed Burgh and Mutter to scamper home as the advantage increased to 7-4.

The CC offense would not go down without a fight. Carthage chipped away at the deficit in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs to trim the Titan lead to 7-6.

Ultimately, the pesky Green and White lineup put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth to push the lead to 10-6. A DiLello solo shot to left center highlighted the frame.

Freshman Lukas Wenz (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) shut down the Carthage offensive attack, en route to his first collegiate save as he tossed the final one and two-thirds innings of action on just a single hit.

Cyrus toed the rubber for the first five innings and did not factor into the decision. The sophomore allowed eight hits and four runs. Freshman Jay Lemenager (Clifton, Ill.-Clifton) got the win (2-1) out of the bullpen, throwing two and a third innings and allowing two hits.

The Titans were outhit 11-10 in the contest. Greer, DiLello, and sophomore Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) each notched a pair of hits.

IWU is scheduled to play another make-up game, tomorrow, Monday, April 11 against Wheaton College. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
