Baseball Prevails in 13-Inning Affair to Split at Augie

Rubber match set for Monday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m. at Horenberger Field

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team outlasted Augustana College, 5-3, in 13 innings in the first game of a doubleheader Friday, April 29, before dropping game two, 5-2. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin twin bill lasted more than eight hours at Brunner Field in Rock Island, Ill. IWU moved to 16-16 overall, 7-7 in the CCIW with the split, while Augie jumped to 24-9 (8-6 CCIW).

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 5, Augustana 3
A strong effort on the bump by senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) kept the game scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, where the Vikings scraped across a run on three hits. Back-to-back singles with one out put runners on the corners, before a sacrifice fly to center allowed the go-ahead run to trot home and put Augie ahead, 1-0, into the fifth.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense finally broke through in the sixth, pouncing for two runs on three hits and an Augie miscue. Seniors Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Nequa Valley) and Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) registered back-to-back doubles, with DiLello's two-bagger driving in Ranneklev and tying the game at one. After sliding into third on an error, DiLello crossed the plate on junior Jalen Ping's (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) single, giving IWU a 2-1 edge.

Augustana reclaimed the lead with a two-run eighth. A leadoff single was followed by a hit by pitch, putting two Vikings aboard with nobody out. A single to right scored a pair to push Augie ahead, 3-2, with IWU coming to bat in the ninth.

After coming through with a pinch-hit single, sophomore Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) scooted into second on a sac bunt, and moved to third on a groundout. Ranneklev brought Bleker home on a single to left to even the score, 3-3, with Augie coming to the plate.

Jay Lemenager (Clifton, Ill.-Clifton) ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth, as a walk put the winning-run on with one out. With the go-ahead run on second after a sac bunt, Lemenager battled back to end the frame with a strikeout to send the game into extras.

A two-out error put senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Prairie) on second in the top of the 13th. The free baserunner proved costly as Ranneklev followed with a single and quickly stole second to put two in scoring position for DiLello. Another miscue, Augie's sixth of the contest, saw both Greer and Ranneklev score to give IWU a 5-3 edge.

The Vikings brought the tying run to the plate after a one-out single, by senior Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.-Warren Township) struck out the next batter before inducing a game-ending flyout to secure the win.

Duffy put together a quality start for the Green and White, fanning four over seven innings of work. The senior hurler scattered five hits and allowed just one run. Lemenager threw three innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits before Hill closed out the final three frames. Hill, who earned the win to move to 1-1 on the year, struckout three and walked one, while giving up one hit.

Offensively, the Green and White cranked out 12 hits to Augie's eight. Ranneklev paced the offense, going 3-for-7 with two runs scored and a RBI. Ping also picked up a multi-hit effort as he went 2-for-7 with one driven in.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 2, Augustana 5
The nightcap saw Augie score a run in the fifth before an hour-long rain delay interrupted the game in the sixth. The Vikings tacked on three runs on one hit, an error, and two walks around the delay to jump ahead, 4-0.

With the Green and White's bats struggling, Augustana tacked on a run in the seventh to extend its lead to 5-0 into the eighth.

IWU's offense mustered just one hit in over the first eight innings, a triple by Ranneklev in the early goings. Greer ripped a leadoff single to center to kick off Illinois Wesleyan's half of the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single to left off the bat of Ranneklev kept the Titans rolling and put runners on the corners for DiLello, who singled to left to bring home Greer. The RBI single by DiLello trimmed the deficit to four, 5-1, and forced an Augie pitching change with two on and nobody out.

The pitching change did not immediately slow the Titans as Ping recorded IWU's fourth straight single, a run-scoring base knock to right. Following back-to-back strikeouts, Bleker drew a walk to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate, but another strikeout ended the comeback effort short, 5-2.

Sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) got the start on the bump, and was ultimately sacked with the loss. Cyrus threw 5.2 innings, with six strikeouts, but was tagged for four runs on five hits. Freshman Morgan McFarlane (Chicago, Ill.-St. Laurence) took over out of the rain delay, where he went on to toss 2.1 innings in which he allowed on run on one hit to go along with a strikeout.

Ranneklev led the Titan offense, going 2-for-4, with a triple and a run scored. Greer, DiLello, and Ping accounted for IWU's other base hits, as Augie outhit Illinois Wesleyan, 6-5.

The final contest of the three-game series will take place Monday, May 2, in Bloomington. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Horenberger Field.
