Baseball Falls to Eastern Illinois in Close Contest

Titans outhit the Panthers 11-6

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took a break from College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action by taking on Division I Eastern Illinois University for a unique contest, Wednesday, April 27 at Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Panthers defeated IWU by a final score of 7-4. With the setback, the Green and White's record now sits at 15-15, while EIU upped its record to 26-12.

The Titans scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) put together an eight-pitch at bat, eventually singling through the right side, allowing senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) to score, who singled to lead off the game. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) then grounded out to short, driving in DiLello to push the score to 2-0.

EIU pieced together a four run home half first inning on two hits to take the 4-2 lead.

The Panthers added one run in the bottom of the third to open up a 5-2 advantage as the game progressed to the fourth inning.

In the fourth, sophomore Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) executed a hit and run to perfection as Mutter scampered home to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) laced a key two out, bases loaded, line drive single in the fifth inning to drive in DiLello as the Titans cut the Panther lead to 5-4.

Eastern Illinois tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth to generate a 7-4 advantage heading into the top of the seventh.

The Panther bullpen was able to shut the door as EIU was able to defeat the Titans by a final score of 7-4.

The Titans outhit the Panthers with a final tally of 11-6, while all 17 hits were singles. Perona led the offense with his three-for-four evening. DiLello, Mutter, Greer, and Hutson each notched a pair of singles.

Junior Bryce Lohman (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) took the loss (0-3) on the mound. The IWU pitching staff allowed eight free passes to EIU's two.

The Titans will continue their CCIW slate with a road double dip against Augustana College, Friday, April 29. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Rock Island, Ill.
