Baseball Drops a Pair to Millikin

Record sits at 15-14

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team made the short drive to Decatur, Ill. to tangle with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival, Millikin University, Saturday, April 23 for a twin bill. In game one, Millikin enjoyed a three-run first inning and won by a final score of 7-2. The Big Blue carried its momentum to the tune of a 10-4 victory in the night cap. The Green and White's record sits at 15-14 (6-6 CCIW), while Millikin's record jumped to 21-12 (7-6 CCIW).

Game one: Illinois Wesleyan 2, Millikin 7

The Blue Blue offense sprung for three runs on two hits in the first inning and never looked back.

The Titans offense put together two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) doubled down the right field line and freshman Brady Hartman (Milan, Ill.-Sherrard) drew a walk as IWU had runners on first and second, with one away. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) doubled down the right field line, allowing Perona to score to cut the deficit to 3-1. Junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) grounded out to second base, driving in Hartman on the play. The score stood at 3-2, Millikin, heading into the bottom of the fourth.

MU then scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 6-1 lead.

The score would remain unchanged until the Blue Blue tacked on one run in the eighth to enjoy a 7-2 cushion.

Millikin was able to thwart any comeback hopes as MU took game one of the double dip by a final score of 7-2.

Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill-Pontiac) took the loss (4-2) as he worked seven innings of action, allowing eight hits and striking out a pair.

IWU outhit the Big Blue by a final tally of 11-9. Senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) topped the offense with his three-for-five afternoon. Perona, Mutter, and Burgh each tallied a pair of hits.

Game two: Illinois Wesleyan 4, Millikin 10

The Titans first five hitters reached base safely in the top of the first that led to three runs. Senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) singled, Ranneklev singled, senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) walked, and Perona singled, driving in Greer to make the score 1-0. Mutter followed by reaching on a fielder's choice, earning an RBI as Ranneklev crossed the plate. Junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) then doubled, driving home DiLello to open up a 3-0 lead.

However, the Big Blue answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to knot the score at 3-3 after one inning of play.

The Big Blue generated a run in the third inning to take its first lead of the contest by a score of 4-3.

The Titans tied the score in the fifth inning as Ping drove in Ranneklev via a sacrifice fly to make the score, 4-4.

Millikin, once again, re-claimed the lead by scoring two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to open up an 8-4 advantage heading into the seventh inning. MU added a pair of runs in the eighth to open up a comfortable 10-4 lead.

MU took game two by a final score of 10-4.

Sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) got the start on the bump. Cyrus worked two and a third innings, allowing one earned run and did not factor into the decision. Freshman Lukas Wenz (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) was tabbed with the loss (0-2).

The Big Blue out hit the Titans with 11, compared to IWU's eight. Greer paced the offensive efforts with a three-for-five nightcap. Ranneklev and Perona each turned in two-for-four performances.
