Baseball Readies for Back-to-Back Contests

Scheduled to play Eureka and Wheaton

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After taking two-of-three from Carroll University over the weekend, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team is set to put its two-game win streak on the line against Eureka College in a non-conference matchup, tomorrow, April 20. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Titans will then travel to Wheaton, Ill. to tangle with the Thunder, Thursday, April 21 with a first pitch set for 3 p.m. The Green and White own a record of 15-11 (6-3 CCIW). The Red Devils bring their 15-14 overall record into Bloomington, while Wheaton sits at 10-15 (6-4 CCIW). 

The Green and White last took to the diamond Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, for a three-game set against Carroll. After losing game one, IWU won games two and three in the series by final scores of 3-0 and 9-3. 

Eureka enters the midweek duel with a struggling offensive effort. Having lost four in a row, EC has been outscored 36-16 after being defeated by Knox College, April 12, and dropping three to Fontbonne University April 15-16.

For Wheaton, the story is different. The Thunder last took on CCIW foe Carthage College, Saturday, April 16. WC's offense found its stride in a 14-7 victory.

The Titans and Red Devils are set to play each other for the first time in just under 19 years as the teams last met in 2003. IWU owns an impressive 7-1 all-time series record that was highlighted by a six game winning streak from 1998-2001. 

IWU and the Thunder have met a total of 100 in a series that dates back to the 1989 campaign. IWU holds a 73-27 all-time record over WC. However, Wheaton most recently had IWU's number by enjoying a 15-4 victory, eight days ago, April 11.

In the teams nine conference contests so far this year, Illinois Wesleyan ranks second in the CCIW with a .343 batting average, 114 hits, five triples, 86 RBI, .467 slugging percentage, and 62 walks.

Individually, senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) is having a sensational start to conference play. DiLello ranks first in the CCIW with his 0.682 on-base percentage. The Springfield, Ill. native is second with a .567 batting average, a .867 slugging percentage, 1.549 OPS, 18 and runs scored. 

Sophomore Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) owns the top batting average in the CCIW with a .583 clip.

On the bump, the Titans pitching staff ranks third in the CCIW with a 5.76 earned run average, behind Augustana and North Central. 

Senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac) and junior Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, with 18 innings pitched. Both horses have struck out 17 batters in conference action. Duffy currently sits in second with his pair of conference victories.
