Baseball Splits Twin Bill Against Carroll Behind Stellar Defense

Duffy earns fourth win in the night cap

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team took on College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Carroll University for a double dip, Friday, April 15 at Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill. In game one, the Pios defeated IWU with a final score 7-4. Behind seven shutout frames from senior Jacob Duffy (Pontiac, Ill.-Pontiac), the Titans managed to split the twin bill, winning the nightcap by a final of 3-0. The Green and White's record now sits at 14-11 (5-3 CCIW), while the Pios own a 12-15 (5-4 CCIW) clip.

Game one: Carroll 7, Illinois Wesleyan 4

The Pioneers scored one run in the top of the first inning to generate a quick 1-0 lead.

A defensive gem by junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) preserved the 1-0 deficit as he crashed into the right field fence, hauling in the web gem, and robbing the Pios of an extra base hit as the game progressed to the home half of the third.

A key two-out base knock to right field by senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) allowed fellow senior Jack Schneider (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) to scamper home after earning a base on balls to tie the score at one apiece after three innings of play.

However, Carroll struck for three runs on four hits, to create a 4-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Another key two-out RBI courtesy of sophomore Louis Persona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech), brought home senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) to reduce the deficit to 4-2 after four innings.

The Pioneers capitalized on a Titan miscue and deposited a three-run homer to push the CU advantage to 7-2 half way through the contest.

The Titans showed some late life in the bottom of the ninth as Ranneklev doubled down the left field line, bringing home freshman Matt Robertson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) to cut the deficit to 7-3. Senior Jared Mutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) grounded out to the shortstop, allowing senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) to cross the plate to make the score 7-4, but CU's bullpen thwarted the Titan comeback hope, 7-4.

Junior Scott Monocchio (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) got the start on the bump. The southpaw took the loss (4-1) and tossed five innings of work, allowing seven hits. Freshman Josh Davis (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, surrendering three hits.

Ping, Ranneklev, DiLello, and Perona each notched a pair of hits to pace the Titan offense as IWU outhit Carroll by a final tally of 11-10.

Game Two: Carroll 0, Illinois Wesleyan 3

With Duffy cruising, the Titans opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as Perona laced a double right over the third base bag and later advanced to third on a Pio balk. Greer found a barrel, driving an offering to left center, allowing Perona to easily score as IWU enjoyed its first lead of the day, 1-0. Freshman Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-St. Viator) added to the lead with a two-out RBI as he singled through the left side, driving home Greer, to open up a 2-0 advantage after three innings.

The score remained unchanged after six innings of play, highlighted by the masterful defensive effort by the Titans. Both teams generated six hits through the first six innings.

IWU welcomed an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as sophomore Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) delivered a slicing line drive into right center, allowing junior Thomas Bleker (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard West) to round third and trot home, increasing the Titan cushion to 3-0.

Freshman Lukas Wenz (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua) came out of the Green and White bullpen and shut the door, en route to earning his second save of the season, tossing the final six outs.

Duffy got the nod on the bump, where the Pontiac, Ill. native kept the Pios off balance with his variety of offerings. With command of his arsenal, he toed the rubber for seven scoreless innings, scattered seven hits, and earned the victory to up his record to 4-1.

Both teams tallied eight hits in the night cap. Greer led the offense with a pair of base knocks.

The Titans will see a quick turnaround as the team will conclude the three-game series tomorrow, April 16 against the Pios. The contest is set for a 10 a.m. first pitch at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Ill.
