Crucial Two-Out Hitting Lifts Baseball Over Carroll

Cyrus allows one hit over six innings pitched

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team claimed a crucial College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin series with a 9-3 victory over Carroll University in the weekend rubber match, Saturday, April 16 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Ill. The bats came alive as IWU tallied nine runs between the third and fourth innings and sophomore Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) took care of the rest on the mound. With the win, the Titans' record improved to 15-11 (6-3 CCIW), while Carroll's record slipped to 12-16 (5-5 CCIW).

Cyrus pitched out of bases loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the second with a timely strikeout and a routine line drive to center field to keep the game scoreless heading into the third.

The Titans carried the momentum into the top of the third as IWU earned three runs on four hits, all with two outs. Sophomore Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) continued his strong weekend at the dish with  a triple into the left center gap. Senior Cole Greer (Springfield, Ill.-Pleasant Plains) notched a single into right field, driving home Perona to crack the scoreboard with an early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles by senior Dominic DiLello (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) and junior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood) pushed the lead to 3-0 as each recorded an RBI.

The bats stayed hot in the fourth inning as junior Ethan Burgh (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) singled through the left side, allowing sophomore Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) to trot home, as he scorched a double to left field, increasing the Titan lead to 4-0. Greer earned his second run batted in of the morning as the Springfield, Ill. native singled, scoring Burgh, to push the cushion to 5-0.

With two gone, DiLello sent his second round-tripper of the year over the left field fence, driving in senior Evan Ranneklev (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) and Greer as the lead grew to 8-0. Cyrus helped his own cause by lacing a single that allowed Ping to cross the plate as the score stood at 9-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

The Pioneers scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh to cut into the deficit as the score stood at 9-3.

However, the Titan bullpen solidified the victory as the game ended with a final score of 9-3.

Cyrus earned the win on the bump (3-1) as the sophomore tossed six innings of one-hit ball, while striking out seven.

Every starter for the Green and White accumulated at least one base hit as IWU outhit the Pios, 15-5. Ranneklev led the offense with four hits, including one triple. Greer, DiLello, and Hutson each notched two hits.

The Titans will remain on the road for their next contest, taking on Wheaton College in a game that was rescheduled from April 13. These two will square off Monday, April 16 in Wheaton, Ill. with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
