Palmer’s Late Three-Pointer Gives IWU Tournament Win Over DePauw

Eck breaks IWU career rebounding record

Press Conference

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Freshman Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill-Geneva) sent the Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team into the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament with a three-pointer with one second to go as the Titans (20-8) knocked out 15th-ranked DePauw University, 56-54, Friday night, March 4.

The Titans saw their eight-point halftime advantage disappear as the Tigers (23-4) hit a three-ball with 6:18 to play to take a 47-44 lead.

After a pair of free throws by freshman Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) pulled the Green and White within one, fellow freshman Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) drained a three-pointer and drew a foul. Powers completed the four-point play at the line to turn the table, putting the Titans on top, 50-47, with 5:32 left.

Junior Katelyn Heller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) upped the lead to five on a layup, but the Tigers came roaring back with a 5-0 run.

With DePauw leading 54-52 with 1:09 left, senior Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin), who broke IWU's career blocks record in the contest, swiped a pass and was fouled on the ensuing layup attempt. Eck went 1-for-2 from the line to pull the Titans within one with 17 seconds remaining.

DePauw drew a foul near mid-court with 12 seconds on the clock to earn a trip to the free throw line with hopes of closing things out. After making the first freebie, the second was rebounded by Powers and quickly outlet to senior Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West). Lansford flew up the court before driving down the left side of the lane and finding a wide open Palmer for the kickback three to propel Illinois Wesleyan into the second round of the tournament.

Powers, who hit four triples, finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with six rebounds, two steals, a block, and an assist. Huber added 10, while senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More) went for eight points and seven rebounds. Heller tallied eight points, with Lansford notching six points and six assists.

Illinois Wesleyan went 21-for-63 from the floor, 8-for-28 from three-point range, and 6-for-9 at the free throw line. DePauw held a slight edge, going 20-for-50 from the field, but hit just 5-of-19 three-point tries. The Tigers finished 10-for-12 at the FT line.

The Titans, who forced 19 Tiger miscues, scored 17 points off turnovers to DePauw's 12. IWU held a 12-4 advantage in second chance points, a 13-9 lead in bench points, and an 11-4 cushion in fast break scoring.

Illinois Wesleyan will face regional host and 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow night, March 5, at 7 p.m.
