Women’s Hoops Sees Postseason Run End with Loss at No. 12 UW-Whitewater

Titans finish season with 20-9 record

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday night, March 5, after being defeated by host University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 72-54. The Warhawks advance to the Sweet Sixteen next Friday, while the Titans' season finishes up at 20-9.

Whitewater got off to a hot start and garnered an 11-point lead with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter. Freshman Kate Palmer's (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) 7-0 run, which included a four-point play with 2:13 to play and three-pointer on the following possession cut the Warhawk lead to five. The Titans went into the second quarter trailing 19-14.

A barrage of three from the Titans, courtesy of Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) and seniors Brooke Lansford (Leawood, Kan.-Blue Valley West) and Catie Eck (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) kept the game close in the early goings of the second quarter. The Warhawks maintained a five-point lead, 37-32, going into halftime.

The Warhawks rode a hot shooting streak to build a double-digit lead in the third quarter and never looked back as the Titans fell, 72-54.

Palmer came off the bench for a game-high 17 points, including a .375 clip from beyond the arc. Lansford, senior Kaia Bowen (Rantoul, Ill.-St. Thomas More), and Eck each finished with seven points apiece. Lansford dished out a team-high five assists while Bowen finished with a team-high nine rebounds.

Offensively, Whitewater shot a .475 clip from the floor compared to the Titan's .362 clip. IWU narrowly outshot Whitewater from three point range 35.3 percent to 35 percent. The Warhawks had 15 assists to the Titans' 12.

The Warhawks out-rebounded the Titans 43-29, including a 17-12 advantage on the offensive glass. Whitewater also outscored IWU in the paint 36-22 and held a 18-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Saturday's setback marked the final games in the careers of Bowen, Eck, and Lansford. Together, the trio helped the Titans to three NCAA Tournament appearances, three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championships, and 69 wins.
